My friend is an art student and is looking to buy the macbook. She doesn't have internet access so I said I'd do a search for her. Problem is I haven't had a Mac in years so I'm not sure what to look out for. The cheapest I've found so far is €1049 on the Apple Ireland website. Can anyone recommend any shops in the Dublin/ Meath area for cheaper decent macbooks (not PCWorld, she's already checked there)?

What's support like at the moment for the older models? Is there still software available for them or are they doing the same thing as Microsoft by trying to push everyone to buy the latest OS?

    Many thanks x

You won't really get the new macbooks any cheaper than they are on the apple website. Macbooks that don't have the latest version of osx (leopard) can be upgraded for 9 euro - you send proof of purchase to apple with 9 euro and they'll send you out the DVD.

However, my friend bought a macbook a few weeks ago and the guy in the o2 store just took a (sealed) copy of Leopard out of a locker and gave it to her for free.

As shes a student she should get the education discount. I had a look on the website and that the lowest spec macbook works out at e 986.15

Yep, Irish Apple Store with student discount would be the best way to buy new.

Edit: Dóh. looked a bit harder and I bought mine before October so it doesn't apply.

No, MacWorld 2008. Might be new announcements etc Macworld Better safe than sorry to wait, in case of a price cut/newer tech etc.

wow , can the leopard for 9 euro be verified ????????

    are you serious?

If you bought your mac before the cut off date, some time in October, then the upgrade cost is €9.

If you bought a new Mac that only shipped with Tiger between 1st October and 31st December 2007, you can get leopard for €9. Look for 'Up to date' on the Apple website for the details. EDIT: beaten to it :p

OP, prices probably won't drop per se after Macworld, however when Apple updates their products they tend to keep the prices the same as the old ones, so prices on the old models then drop when bought from 3rd party retailers.

Macbooks were only updated in November. No way will Apple refresh them again so soon. MBPs are definitely due a revision however. Still best to wait though.

I wonder where in the line-up this supposed flash-based/optical-drive-free notebook will fall? I'm guessing somewhere between consumer and pro to fill the gap left by the old 12" Powerbook.
