People have actually been saying that souljah boy is bringing hip hop back to the old skool...you know, when hip hop was about crazy new dances and boasting and stuff, before gangsta rap came onto the scene

But yeah the song is as irritating as hell. Wouldn't get too upset, hes probably just another one hit wonder

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,960 ✭✭✭DarkJager

The sooner he disapears the better. The guy is a ****in insult to hip hop, and the sooner somebody explains to him that writing his name in tipp ex across the lens of his sunglasses is not cool, we'll all be better off.

To be honest when i first heard this back in May, i thought it was a bit of a laugh, crankin the Souljah Boy at parties for fun. But i was really bored of it come August/September.

All of a sudden in November Spin 1083 and FM 104 have it on all the time and its properly doing my head in. If im at a party now everyone expects me to lead the "cranking" but the fad needs to be stomped out.

So now, if someone asks me to put it on, ill play "**** The Souljah Boy" more fun.

In looking at it in a more positive light.... i agree with the point of the crazy new dances...nothing at all wrong with that aspect imo....but my original post was in relation to the music/rapping aspect.

The whole "crunk" style thats blown up over the past few years is to blame for this. I've tried my best to get my head around the likes of Lil Jon, but I just don't get it. Crunk this and crunk that with random shouting throughout it, it just doesn't carry any sort of message or vibe I can relate to in anyway. Sure its supposed to be party music, but isn't party music supposed to be good?? :)

I'd have to disagree...Party music is for having a good time irrespective of good or not. The crunk is alright in small amounts in a hip hop set...but too much of the vocals wrecks me head! YOUUUUUU! :)

Suppose it all really depends on your dispostion towards hip hop in the first place. Sure the teenage girls would be bouncing around the place for the likes of Soulja Boy, but for people like myself ,as a fan of real hip hop and rap like Immortal Technique, Buckshot and the classics like 2pac, Biggie etc I just could not get into the whole crunk scene. Yaaayyyyyyyyyyaa (Lil John) - I mean WTF???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 324 ✭✭BangBeater

yeah, true... & OKAAAAAAYYY.... the Dave Chapelle skits of lil jon are funny sh it!

Awful song but in fairness stuff by Dipset, Pharell, odd bit of Kanye cheese, very little decent ever tops the chart here.

As for crunk yeah alot of it is annoying and brainless, Petey Pablo Freek a Leek and Get Low are the only regularly listenable ones (wreck it in the clubs as well, some craic at Halloween fancy dress in Sin, locked out of my bin in the height of it to Get Low  :D )

...he's still not as bad as Laffy Taffy.

Beware, he has a new single on the way. Bound to be as ignorant and retarded as the last.;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,460 ✭✭✭Orizio

    16 or 66, it doesn't matter.

I wouldn't mind but it is seen as Hip-Hop and its on every radio and TV I come across. Thats a ****ing problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,460 ✭✭✭Orizio

He is 17, about the same age as Nas when he dropped his debut verse on Breaking Atoms...

Soulja Boy - Your taking him too seriously...he is just trying to make millions by selling out as much as possible...you have to admire his intelligience for a 17 year old...he pretty much promoted himself before he got signed

    Basically. Brilliant entrepreneur, **** MC.

I'm sure he got that beat for next to nothing off the net as well.

Sean Kingston is only like 17 too, its great to see them touring making millions at that age to be honest.

Love the song. Don't understand why so many hip hop purists dont like it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,947 ✭✭✭BLITZ_Molloy

Sure I thought it was pretty good the first few times I saw the video. The dance was imaginative. Crunk tends to revolve around hooks (or in the case of Three 6 Maria and UGK fantastic production) rather than clever wordplay and or technical emceeing. You can't have everything!

Radio is the problem. They pick up on an incredibly narrow selection of music and then run the tunes into the ground. I can't really listen to Eminem, Dre or 2Pac anymore because I've just heard too much of their stuff and little else to break up the monotony.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,960 ✭✭✭DarkJager

I forced myself to sit through the video last night because I really wanted to give it a second chance and see what the fuss is about....Unfortunately its still as sh1t as I remember it being the first time I heard it. I even tried to listen to the lyrics to see if there was anything redeeming there but again no. "Supersoak that ho" "yoouuuuuuuuuu" and some other phrases I can't remember because they were so terrifyingly childish and sh1t.

Soulja Boy - do hip hop a favour and DO NOT release another single. And you might also want to take those stupid ****in tippexd glasses off your face because no matter how many chains or flashy clothes you wear, they still make you look like a fcukin gimp...

    Generic beat, trash lyrics.

Really, the fact that the radio puts this kind of Hip-Hop out is the problem.

Agreed. You'd be hard pressed to find any decent hip hop played on the radio.

ok, well... point of Interest about this blight on music that is soulja boy: this foooool actually said he is better than Jay z , 50 (which is possible) and Kanye and also started to say that maybe even better than Gza from wu Tang... So this tit clearly wants to stay around.. but as an avid listener of hip hop/ urban/ r'n'b - i have to say i dont listen to the radio, ever, as proper urban stuff is very rarely played... when is the last time DMX or Sole' got played- or has anydoby heard of sole? amazing rapper...

Anybody really into hip hop wouldn't be judging whats played on radio as quality- coz clearly the good stuff is'nt really played.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

GZA said something about him on stage. Either he said something or he repeated what the crowd said, can't remember. Then 50 Cent said something about GZA in response. I'll try and find the links.

Does it really matter if Soulja Boy said he's better than all these rappers? No, not really. He's a one hit wonder more than likely. He'll be forgotten about very quickly as soon as the next one hit wonder comes along to replace him. He may as well say what he can now that the camera and attention is on him.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,960 ✭✭✭DarkJager

Nobody with an understanding of Hip Hop and rap and a true appreciation for it will ever rank that fcukwit Soulja Boy as being good. He's "kid-hop", brainless talentless sh1t thats put out, aimed at the 5-10 year old market. Better than GZA??? He must be off his ****in mind to even let the thought about comparing himself to GZA enter his head.

The guy is a musical and fashion sense retard who will hopefully be long forgotten in the next 6 months.

so, everyone has a differant idea what is quality urban stuff..
my personal selection: these get hevy rotation in my ipod:

DMX ( yes i love this man)
    Sole' (love her also)
    Anthony Hamilton ( soul)
    Joe ( rnb)
    Ginuine (rnb)
Amerie (godess- loved since 1st ever single dropped~)
    Aaliyah ( miss you gurl)
TLC ( my sole ambition was to be a spare member)
J Holiday ( new but great)
Alicia Keys ( who dont love her?)
Mos Def (ms. fat booty --- what??? :)
    Common
    Cannibal ox
Foxy Brown ( saucy with class sort of)
Timbaland (from when he wasnt a brand name :) )
    Brownstone

Lots of rock music also is great... Not much of it gets airplay though.. i mean what the Deftones did with Sade "ordinary love"... bet the woman herself would have loved it!

I mean i could just go on & on... oh tis good stuff.. also, www.myspace.com/oraclegurl
    Tis all great stuff...
so bit of a clue.. have a positive day people! woo!

I hate the word Urban when used to describe music.

Hmm... would you rather i called it the anti- country music instead..? Em, it did all kinda start in a very large urban area in the u.s.. Everything is so flippin P.C these days. Have to be careful about calling urban music urban... next i wont be able to say i'm white- i'll have to call myself pigmentationally challenged! hahahaha :D

It has nothing to do with being politically correct. It started in New York City therefore it is urban music. By that logic any music that came from a city is urban. Such a stupid name for music.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

"Urban music today isn't necessarily defined by a specific genre, like rap, rock or garage - it's about a shared set of cultural ethics," he said.

"It's about a reverence to cultural movements like hip-hop, which was in itself a construct of sixties R&B, rock 'n' roll and seventies disco."

Jazz was "probably the first urban genre that ever existed", he added.

hmmm. . . . . . Cant we just enjoy music rather than be bored with the whole "i know more about the origin of it than you" thing.. At the end of the day, call it whatever makes ya happy- im sure jay-z could care less what its call once he gets paid... ya know?

    That's half the problem.

Hate the pr1ck too but the Travis Barker ''remix'' (just lots of drums) isn't all that bad.

Soulja Boy is pop, and even worse he's a fad. He's like the MC Hammer of our generation, wears stupid looking clothes, dances for our amusement but the difference is this guy cant rap for ****, its just nonsesical slogans.

I agree that its more than likely soulja will just be a 1 hit wonder but the song itself does have a certain originality to it. I think alot of the 'grine/grind/crunk' sound has a sort of reggae feel to it, if you ignore all the rap and crappy synth keyboards.

I hate to say it but 'grine/grind/crunk' has rekindled my interest in hip-hop.

Better than f**kin 'garage' thats for sure.

i have to agree here but i must add that when you're out and that song comes on in a club everybody just takes the mick out of it and do the dance it's great!!!!:D

Heard his new one on 2FM yesterday on way home... Honestly, I had to switch the song off. It's horrendously bad. I mean Crank That has better produced beats compared to the newest tripe. Please Soulja Boy, go away!
