    From engadget..

    Apple's updated the Mac Pro with Intel's new 45nm quad-core Xeon CPUs at up to 3.2GHz. The new 8-core config is $2,800, and Apple is calling these machines Apple's fastest desktops ever. Standard options:

    * 2GB of 800MHz DDR2 RAM
    * ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT (256MB)

    No Blu-ray, as rumored,as rumored, but it can be configured with plenty of drives (as usual), RAID, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT or NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 graphics cards, and 802.11n.

    Apple's updated their Xserve boxes. Starting at $2,999, Apple's calling their new Xserve the "most powerful apple server ever. The Xserve has up to two quad-core 3.0 GHz Intel Xeon 5400 series processors. That's 8-cores pumping away inside a 1U rack server. Two PCI Express 2.0 expansion slots provide up to 4x the I/O bandwidth of the previous Xserve in support of the latest multi-channel 4Gb Fibre channel and 10Gb Ethernet cards.

    The question this raises is: Why didn't Steve wait just a week and announce these at Macworld?
    Likely answer: He has something much much bigger to announce there
    oooh suspense........

    Makes more sense to announce just after Intel announced their new processors at CES, IMO. Jump on the bandwagon while everyone is still hyped.

    Yeah I think he probably wants the focus to be on their laptop range next week. Plus announcing these now will only generate more interest and hype for next week.

    i, for one, am quite happy that they bumped the MacPro and XServe today rather than next week! Though i'm kinda bummed they didn't include a BD drive, especially given the recent traction BD has been having.

    wait and see!!
