Another Wage review inquiry...

Sorry if people get this question a lot but I taught I'd ask to see the responce! I'm 22 and started my first time job out of college in october. My yearly review is the end of February, bringing me up to close to 5 months working here. My job is a process engineer in a medium sized company.

When I was negociating my wages when I started I asked for 26,000 but was given 28,000. I think a combination of a instant good rapport with my bosses and the agreement of hard work (which I have put in) in return were the reason for this. But I'm thinking now that maybe the larger salary was given to me so they wont need to give me a any way decent increase?! Anyone any ideas what I can expect or better, what I should ask for? Thanks in advance.

Depends on the local directives of your company.
5 months work isnt much to be going in making wage demands
with, esp if theres a probationary period.

Also, they might have a standard % pay raise scale.

You were probably given 28,000 as it was the standard graduate salary for your type of position. If they payed you less than what other graduates were receiving it could quite well have caused issues for them in the longer term.

After less than five months of work as a graduate and presumably while still under a probation period I wouldn't expect much of an increase.

Yea I'm under probation until April. I taught I'd ask as reviews are done yearly and well to be honest I have nothing really to go on apart from what mates are telling me. This ranges from between 2,000 to 5,000 increase. 5k is a bit much but I would hope for something like 2k-3k as I have nearly a year relative work experience prior to this job so I didnt come in completely fresh either! Cheers for the imput!!

OP, I wouldn't go expecting a pay increase in April if I were you but at that stage you could negotiate that you have another review in October when you are there a year and you may get a pro rate increase to bring you in line with your 2009 review.

As for pay increases, 5% is the max that most large companies are paying out which is in line with inflation. 5% of €28k is €1400 and that is the maximum you can expect. Most companies will pay between 3.5-4%.

You're just starting out in your career, your qualification has allowed you to start about €6k higher on the payscale than non graduates. Now you have to put in the work and get as much experience as you can so you can be in a better position in 2009 when pay reviews come around.

this is true from my experience
how can they get away with pay increases less than inflation ?

the public sector and their constant strikes and huge pay increases dont realise how good they have it

And I heard on the radio this morning that certain unions in the public sector are considering strike action over not getting an increase this year. (INO?) This is even with their better pensions and currently higher wages (than similar private sector).

Back to the OP's question. While 5% would be the max, I don't many companies will pay out even that. You are in a good position though, being at the low end of the overall pay spectrum (within your role), a 5% increase for you is a lot less than a 5% increase for the guy on 50k+. Since you are still on probation and haven't really had time to prove your worth/ massive contribution to the team/ core member, I would be happy with what you get this year and next year you will be in a much better position to negotiate.

    Good Luck
