Do's and dont's - Training with colds

    Hi guys,
I just wanted to ask about training with colds/flu and get peoples two cents. Considering the time of year I'm sure I'm not the only one hit!

I know the usual above the neck ok, below the neck no no - but am looking for a bit of elaboration.

I have a head cold as in I'm not chesty but I do have a sore throat, blocked nose, etc. so should I be doing cardio or weights? And should I reduce my effort?

I was wondering because the product I am taking (Solpa-Sinus) contains paracetomol and does this make a difference and what is wise/unwise to do?

    Thanking you in advance wizards!!

I had a cold and chesty cough last week so I did nothing until it passed.

IMO, if you have a cold and/or chesty cough you should take it easy until it clears up. It's usually just a few days.

    Don't listen to me

Ok now that's out of the way... If I can get out of bed then I'm gonna train. Hell if I can't get out of bed I'll still find some way to haul myself up and train. Probably a terrible idea tho.

Rigorous exercise temporarily reduces your immunity so it's better to rest and eat well when you're sick rather than train and make it worse!

    Thanks for your words lads,

I gather people seem to be inclined to take a rest & enjoy the "break", which makes sense. However it seems these type of colds are hanging around for at least a week and given the "Xmas indulgences" I am keen to get back into the new year without chasing up Everest!!

My own fault I went out on the rip Sat after a heavy leg day Fri and was hoping ystrday was just a messy hangover but it seems to have developed into a cold! :(

I have learned a lesson though and Lazlo I will bear that in mind in future, after training my body is temp actually weaker and susceptible to infection etc. we banjax our bodies to regrow bigger, better, stronger! very true!

I find when I actually have the cold, it's best to take a rest but in the lingering time after the cold when I've recovered but am still clogged up, exercise is great for clearing the head.

It can be alright as long as you don't overdo it. If I'm bunged up with a cold, I'll normally have a leisurely swim!

I had a flu over xmas and then a cold that lingered on because the second I felt like I could do anyting I was in the gym. Just made it worse really. Just rest while you're sick. Pity I don't take my own advice...

Argh it's a proper bummer. I've had a sore throat and a very stubborn cold for the past week and am sitting on my hands here fretting about when I can get back to the gym.

I've never had a cold that didn't do the decent thing and feck off after a few days but this bad boy is a bit of a different animal. I've been talking to a few different people who say they've had it for about three weeks.

If that happens me I think I'll eat my own face from the inside out with the frustration. But am trying not to be silly and make myself worse by doing a two hour session tomorrow.

    Bleddy colds.

A few times when I've felt a cold or flu coming on, I put on an extra layer or two when I'm going football training. Having the extra layers on will help sweat it out. After training have a shower & then home for a nice mug of hot tea & stay warm. I felt batter the next morning!
