Watching Jaws over the weekend, the scene with the little kid on the inflatable bed erupting in a blood spray reminded me of how after watching that film as a kid, I went to bed, and I KNEW for a fact, that Jaws was actually under my bed. Never mind the whole "needs to live under the sea" thing, I didnt care, I knew he was there, and that was enough to erupt in a loud, "MAAAAAAAAAAA, HEEEELLLLPPPP!!!!".
As well as that, I often thought Michael Jackson was in my wardrobe after thriller (did I see the future? :p). In fact, my older brother would threaten to play the song on tape if I didnt do as he said, because even the opening lines of the song were enough to set me shivering with fear.
The other one was the little spooky girl from the "crying girl" painting that we had on the landing. Flipping horrible picture, and to this day, I still dont know why anybody would have one in their house. I believe there was also a "crying boy" painting to complete the set, but thankfully, we didnt have that one.

Funnily enough, I never had a generic boogey man, it was always things I seen on TV or in books that scared me and which I was convinced had just moved into the hotpress.

So what lurked in the dark places of your room when you were small?
    Sharks? Zombies? Zombie sharks?

After watching Jaws when I was a kid I was afraid to use the toilet, thought Jaws would swim up the drain and eat me. My younger sister had a fear that Barry McGuigan would jump through the bedroom window.

My granny had that "crying boy" painting, used to freak us out, she also had a big Native Indian head carved out of wood which scared the bejesus out of me.

My mum had one of those cheesy effect pictures of Jesus on the cross that would blink depending on how you looked at it. It was right beside the toilet, and I'd have to walk past it quickly - eyes down - because I was afraid of it.

Also those old pictures of Jesus or Mary, where they were pulling robes back to expose a heart, used to freak me out as well.

I can't really think of anything under my bed but Mam tells me that when I was a baby in the cot, I had a fear of the painting of Little Bo Peep and the sheep that was on there. She said I ended up scratching it off so I wouldn't have to look at it anymore. :) Sheep ruined my life!

Due to a ladybird book I had as a child, I am terrified of Native Americans or Red Injuns can't watch any film that might have them in them.
My brother is 24 now and still is scared of Indiana Jones movies

There was cork tile on the floor of the room as well, and at night I used to think the floor was alive with ants and wouldn't get out of bed for love or money.

Lastly my older brother had loads of Iron Maiden, Metallica posters in his room, no way would i go in there to call him for dinner, that one with the skulls top chopped off like a hard boiled egg oh jaysis!!

I remember that there was a reproduction of the Mona Lisa at a friend's house. When I was younger (say around 4 or 5) I was bit afraid of it. Maybe it was her smile that scared me.

I had various phases of differant scares...

I remember reading Jurassic Park and being convinced that there were compies in the room, I kept waking up in a cold sweat and freaking out. Strangely it was the compies and not the raptors etc that freaked me out.

I also had a fear of two toys I had, one was a rubber gremlin toy that scared the **** out of me and the other was this kind of yeti Thundercats toy... had them both around the same time and they gave me so many nightmares I gave them to the kid across the street.

I hid a childs version of Bram Stoker's Dracula behind the tv for fear of the cover.

    Being a kid was great.

Same here! The Jaws music used to scare the hell outa me. I think that movie has actually had an effect on me to this day, because my only phobia is of things under the water, like if I see a brick under the water when I'm swimming in the sea I'll panic and swim hell for leather for the shore.

haha, when i was a kid i remember having this really really vivid dream... something about being alone on this really dark street, and a fox chasing me, but the next bit of the dream i remember is in my own house, running, totally petrified, because a badger was chasing me... i legged it up the stairs, into my room, up the ladder to my bunkbed on teh top (this was beofre i had to share with my 5-years-younger sister who had asthma and relegated me to the bottom bunk), but the badger kept prowling around on the floor and waiting for me.

i duno when i woke up, but it was one of those dreams that blurred seriously between sleep and wake, i spent a good deal of my woken time convinced the badger was there... it was literally years before i'd get up for a drink/toilet trip during the night after that dream.

we had wallpaper in that room too, it was little mice, and they lived in a shoe, and there was lots of scenes of that, in nice pastel colours, and there were nice vine leaves around that them connecting the pictures, helping them flow and stuff...except in the dark the vines would converge at one point, and look like millions of spiders...

    ...

    *shudders*

A lot of them holy pictures are downright freaky, the glow in the dark Holy Mary figurines rank up there too.

This picture freaked me out for ages when I was a kid, I hated staying in the countryside after seeing this....

To stay on topic, theres a scene in the film Arachnophobia where the spider crawls and bites a man while he's asleep in bed, it was a horrible scene to watch when you're a kid, gave me a fear of spiders for a long long time.

    God i was a total wuss....:D
