Ha - I can't view youtube in work so assumed it was just an actual vid of Hanley squatting a Ford Transit or something... Hence my semi-serious response! :)

Actually - quick squat question: I've never attempted to find out my "Max Rep" for squatting (or benching or Deadlifting for that matter) as I generally don't have a spotter... I was just wondering if there was kind of a loose 'rule of thumb' for calculating what your max rep may be.. For example, the most I've squatted is 125kg (as of yesterday), that was working up from an empty bar x 20 (20kg) to 40kg (x10), 60kg (x10), 80kg(x10), 90kg(x10), 100kg (x10), 110kg (x5), 115 (x5), 120(x5) and finally 125(x5 and then x3)...

So, after a good warm-up, is it possible to gauge what my 1MaxRep might be? Is there a kind of "formula" as in "add ten percent to the weight you can do five reps of" or something like that? Obviously not an exact science, just curious really...

Same here, I was wondering where the spotters were, and why the casual gear.

Wonder if the lad really thought it was a proper squat or just gave up thinking he would fail.

Seems like a lot of wasted energy on the warm ups. Personally if I was going to 125 or there abouts I'd probably go bar, 60, 80, 100, 120, 130 all x3

I've found my max to be about 10% over my best set of 3-5 or there abouts.

Thanks H, but wouldn't that be alot less work? Or would I do say 3 sets for the heavier weights? The above takes me about 45mins, with good breathers in between.

If I was trying to get an accurate idea of my max based off what I can do for 3 I'd approach it that way just to make sure I'm as fresh as possible.

However if I was training to increase my lifts it would be different alright.

Yeah I figured alright that as far as my Max is concerned, all the x10 reps beforehand wouldn't be the optimal way to go.

    Thanks for that Hanley...

Actually, while I'm feeling inquisitive!: I was just wondering if there was an ideal ratio for your Bench: Squat: DL?

As in, if you can bench 100k, your Squat should be about xxxk and your DL should be about xxxk?

Or are they completely unrelated? Obviously you may be stronger at one than another but for someone like you, Hanley, who competes in all three codes, what kind of ratio (for want of a better word) are you looking for there?
I think I remember g'em mentioning in the New Year Resolution thread that she was looking for a 400kg total competition score - what weight would you aiming to hit the three respective disciplines at to reach a goal like that?

I don't know what the ratio should be tbh, or whether there should even be a ratio. When I benched 115kg in comp, I also pulled 210 if that's any use, so 0.55:1 for me I guess. As for shrugs... depending on whether they're "strict" or "power" shrugs, it could be between 160 and 200ish kg. So I guess around 80% of my best conventionl deadlift for a set of 8 shrugs.

Comp breakdown very much depends on individual strengths and weaknesses. For example I'm looking total 700+kg this year. That's be about a 250kg squat, 185kg bench and 265kg deadlift.

Thanks H, I actually meant to say 'Squat' rather than 'Shrug', sorry bout that!

Great numbers btw - good luck with the 700!

The description in a nutshell translated goes something like this:

I'm 18, weigh 128 lbs and am squatting 423 lbs. There is more weight on the left than right (!). I know that I am not going down fully, but I have only been squatting one month. My friend recorded me on camera. I also repeated the record but didn't record it. Before this I did 340 lbs x1, and 350 lbs x1.
