The lowest I have seen seems to be around the €200 mark plus
    delivery. (Ebay from the UK)

Has anyone seen them cheaper anywhere else?

stop being fancy and get an external like the rest of us !

why should he get an external if he has no need for one.

they take up more power, give him one less usb port, you have to use another plug on your power strip and then not to mention a lot easier to get damaged an external is.

In case you change your mind about it being internal...

    Damn right.

And they are slower. (Limited by the USB bus)
    ie USB(480Mbit/s) vs Sata2(3000Mbit/sec)

Also I can leave the internal one running 24/7 and the
motherboard spins it down when it isn't in use as opposed to me switching
    it on and off manually.

I can create a library for it without worrying about it having a different
drive letter the next time i plug it in.

It will also crash the computer when I have too many USB devices drawing
    power at the one time.

Mozy @ home backup sercive wont let you back up external hardrives.

They cost slightly more due to the enclosure.

    Firewire enclosures cost waaaaaaay more.

Dont see the point in eSATA either for many of the reasons above.

Externals are for people with laptops or for those who want a handy backup.
I wont be using this for either. Video storage is getting insane these days.:)

I have also seen about 5 external drives "break" on many of my friends
compared to 1 internal drive failure that i have ever seen. This is mainly
    due to moving them around.

Enough reasons not to use an external?

    hehe thanks Mark. Well spotted.

I will buy that and just take out the hardrive inside. Will put an old hardrive
into that then and give it to the Girlfriend for her laptop.:)

Ive no idea either the specs of that drive - but any of the External drives I have seen seem to have less Cache memory in the drives than one you would buy to install internally.
It will be slightly slower if you install your os on it - Probably wont make much diff for large video files if thats what you use it for.

    ---edit
Ah there you are - "Buffer size (HDD)= 8 MB / 16 MB"
The last drive "Seagate 750" I ordered from overclockers had 32MB cache...

    “Roll it back”
