    Hey all..

Does anybody know if there are restrictions on the amount of money a person can take into Ireland..?
I am Irish but have been living overseas for a few years.

Im planning to have over 30,000$...Maybe 35 if all goes well when I enter Dublin!!

Will I be stopped for having so much money in my wallet or an envelope in my carry-on bag?? Will they even see it? Anybody ever take a BIG amount of cash through there before..

    Thanks in Advance!!

    Saram..

That'll be way too much I reckon. The limit to bring into the UK is roughly around £6000 and US around $10,000 so 30 grand is rather overboard. They may not see it but if they do you'll be questioned and could have it taken off you - that's in Britain or America, the Irish rules could be different though.

Check this link out for more details.

It's not so much a limit as to what you can bring in rather you must declare cash above the limit of €10,000. You can find more information here http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/customs/customs_controls/cash_controls/index_en.htm.

Do you have an Irish bank account? Is there no way you can do it as a bank transfer? We bought over the proceeds of a house sale in the UK - was over £100k with no hassle but did it via bankers draft or something. Now technology has moved on and much safer and easier doing it electronically.

What currency is that? what type of Dollar... I think people are equating that to Euro...
If its US its only about 20.3k

Just keep existing account open, then open an account here and transfer the money.

Anyway... unless you are very dodgy looking, you will probably not even be stopped. Very lax customs here, except at christmas.

Much less hassle if you have an Irish bank account or a family member's account that you can transfer the money into.

$30,000 in $100 bills would easily fit in your pockets, it is very unlikely that this would be detected, but as stated above over €10,000 is supposed to be declared

    Thanks for your responses..

    Nothing definitive yet though..

I liked the one about dodgy looking..I am not..and I remember the last time I came through Dublin airport I wasnt even given a second look..(mind you I didn't have much cash then)..can they pick up on these things I wonder...haha

First of all..yeah it will be about 21,000 Euros..It is US Dollars..but as mentioned it could easily be taken in an envelope or my wallet..Its not a heavy amount really..

The reason I'd rather not transfer the money to my Irish account beforehand is because the commission fees etc will make it not worth it.I am living in Asia now which makes it more complicated etc.. It is probably a safer option but how unsafe is it to bring that amount of money through the airport..??

I can just declare my money right to make sure everything is above board?? So now the question maybe is.. What will customs do or say If i declare..I have 30,000$..

My excuse- I have lived in Asia for four years and have saved up this money. I am now coming back to my country and going to pump the money into the Irish economy..Is that illegal??

Weigh up your options. You will very much probably be able to fit it in an envelope and pack it into a jacket or inside a bag. But what happens if the bag gets lifted or someone drops their hand into your pocket - even on the flight. You'll spend time asleep. Tiny chance, it's never happened to anyone I know, but this is I'm assuming pretty much everything you've got.
So have a look at travel insurance and ask the insurer specifically if they'll cover the money you're carrying. Will the premium be cheaper than an electronic transfer?

Nope. Though it may be worth holding onto a few documents - old bank statements, payslips and so forth to prove that you built up the money. Afaik, if they suspect that the money was obtained illegally or is to be used for illegal purposes, they can confiscate it. It's a very small chance, but having the documentation to back it up can give you peace of mind.
