hiya everyone... im a real newbie to this, but id ike to try build my pc instead of ordering a standard model, but ive got a couple concerns im hoping someone here will be able to put my mind at ease with

ive got a list of components i recon will make an awesome gaming pc....
what im worried about is will all these components be compatable with one another and are they a decent set up... are there better parts cheaper than the ones ive chosen?

im pretty confident i can put it all together but will they come with the cables, like the power cord and the ribon cable to connect the dvd drive etc....

and lastly, with the sftware busisness... im probably gonna use vista, is there any issues with the drivers... like are the graphics card drivers included in the package? and wil they run ok on vista or is xp a much safer bet... i know vista has a bad rep atm but im figuring that all the updates and new games geared towards vista... am i wrong? :S

thanks so much for the help im sorry is some of these questiones seem really dumb

here are the components im looking to order from dabs.ie (its a good place to get them right?)

Seems like you're picking out out some fairly expensive components.

€55 for a cd±rw & DVD ROM combo drive is too much when you can get DVD±RW drives from as little as €25. [Link]

If your going to spend that much on a processor you probably might as well get a quad core? Otherwise consider the dual core E6750 and use the money saved to upgrade to the €262 Dabs Value GeForce 8800GTS 512MB - it's out of stock at the minute though.

The RAM seem pretty dear too. Is this the ram? I'm not an expert but that looks like some old RAM.

Actually... you'd probably be better off waiting for someone wiser (than me) in the ways of components to help... looking at your motherboard I can see that it's not compatible with the processor you've chosen. You need an Intel compatible motherboard for the Intel processors.

Too tired at the moment to suggest alternatives...

Not to sound cruel or anything, as I'm sure you'll get any building advise you want here, but Dell have a well specced machine for €815 at the minute. It's mentioned in this thread: [Link]

probably best with the quad core.

no you dont need a sound card. the built in sound on that motherboard is great.

just get a good set of speakers and your sorted.

I would recommend the Floppy Disk + Card Reader on this page:
    http://www.marxcomputers.ie/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?product=floppy&cart_id=

instead of the DabsValue card reader you're looking at.

It supports more media types (MMC and full sized Secure Digital - this is critical) and also doubles up as a bootable floppy drive, which can be handy.

Check the rig in my signature. I'm not sure the quad core was the wisest investment of my money - I rarely if ever see the 4 cores working simultaneously, except maybe for DVD encoding or the likes.

I haven't checked the prices on the different processors (dual vs quad), but if there's a significant enough difference, you might want to think if you really are going to see the benefits.

My 2c, for what it's worth.

Games like Alan Wake and many future games will all take advantage of more cores, also I've seen games like World In Conflict, HL2, Crysis, and many others use four cores similtaniously, their good value for money atm too, then again the dual cores are cheaper and can overclock easier, but the quads are pritty good value for money if you look at the future benefits ;)
