Ahhh man, you're forgetting to include the mics used in the studio, the amount of mics used and their placements, how they were mixed, the room the cab was in, the mic pres used, the eq settings on the desk, the compression and effects used in the mix and the compression and eq applied by the guy who mastered it :p

Also, tuning. Periphery play in G, and Meshuggah play in F. That's a big part of the sound.

So in suming up you need to spend 2 years in a high end recording studio and maybe the actual artist themselves to show you or you could just develop your own sound ;)

I dont think Periphery used Mesa's for the recording. Misha (Bulb) mainly uses a POD XT for recording for both his own stuff and Periphery. I believe Meshuggah are quite partial to the old Pods themselves.

Could be something worth looking into.

Hey Patricide, how are you getting any decent metal tone using the TonePort? I've been using it and the sound is crap. How are you recording it? Straight into the PC, Amp, Mixer, Desk, what?

Since you have a Toneport you could try Bulbs Pod patch, its over on Sevenstring.org. Im not sure if it uses any elements not available to the Toneport but its worth a shot.

Edit: Also putting a Tubescreamer in front of your amp/pod will help tighten the tone.

What kind of tuning are you using, Patricide?

using drop c and drop b somtimes, yea getting some nice sounds out of it alright. Got the metal pack add on though so that could be just that.

Is the metal pack worth it? How do the amps included with it compare to the ones with Guitar Rig or Amplitube?

Apperently AmpliTube is the best at recreating Guitar amps especially a metal guitar tone. The standard amps that come with TonePort are crap.

What hardware interface do you have for Guitar Rig?

I use the Toneport on tuning mode to get a dry signal.

well check it for yourself, some rough tracks iv done with the toneport are here www.bebo.com/resurrectirl (thats a tone from the metal pack, not my choice of the tone though blame me guitarist)

then theres www.bebo.com/fearofthesouth thats using some bog standard tones from the toneport.

Neither of those tones really show it off to be honest i got some savage tones out of it in recordings i have myself using both the metal pack and the standard amps. Tis all bout just making the right descisions with bass and what drum sound you have going on in the backround imo.

Anyway back on topic looked around 7string.com and i cant find the patch for the pod that bulb uses anyone wanna shed some light for me?

Ah, well I don't think you're going to get that kind of sound unless you tune a bit lower. Sikth play in Ab for some songs, as far as I know.

While we're on the subject, does anyone know any websites where guitarport users can share patches and so on? I've had a search around and no luck so far.

nope, me neither. there is a line 6 service that does this whenn you open gearbox but the tones are prettty ammm, Crapola.

The GP online thing? Yeah, that is fairly poor.

I found this though: http://www.line6.com/customtone/ Just had a quick look so far but it's a user-uploading library of tones so looking forward to giving them a go.
