Take a walk along the bank of the Thames and in around Soho.

try a browse of http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=london&m=text - it may help identify locations that might appeal to you. HTH.

Everywhere and everything. It depends on your style of photography, your interests and personal needs.
I was thinking about going there soon again, but not in winter. I need more daylight for my photography. Maybe in June.
    Good luck!

I know the City area quite well so my quick walking guide for the square mile would be:

Start around the new City Hall south of the river, wander over Tower Bridge, around by Tower Of London then back up along the thames walk to London Bridge (unfortunaly the Monument is under repair at the moment).. maybe headup Gracechurch St towards Leadenhall Market (Lloyds building and Gherkin near here)... then a short walk to Bank (lots of financial buildings), straight on upto St. Pauls, which can be quite photographic. From there you could either tube it to the West End or walk down back over the river to the Tate Modern.

Thats as far as I've got so far :) ... just avoid the tube at all costs, there's so much architecture and things to see that are easily missed if you just walk 5 minutes instead of 8mins on the Tube...
edit: also a quick word of advice: they really don't care for photographers with big cameras on the Tube, don't use a tripod or spend long framing a shot, get it quick and get on or out.

The east bank of the Thames opposite Victoria Station has some magnificent old run-down buildings.

If you are planning on doing photography in and around london the best thing to do which i did when i was over there last year was picked up one of the bus maps that the tourist buses used and literally walked the bus routes! Its a great way to see London and you arent stuck on a bus for the day (something I hate)All though i was knackered by the end of the day I got some great pics (well I think they were good)Also if you do want to use the tube and regular public transport bus pick up one of the tickets that do you for both the tube and the bus...works out best for all

There are some nice views of the city from up on Primrose Hill, and in and around Camden are some good street photography opportunities (and pubs :)). And the Thames, as has been mentioned.

Big thank you, and as always great ideas..

I was wondering if it is possible to get the tourist bus and get on and off at each place and simply wait for the next one ?

Or a route plan, the map idea seems like a good idea.

Hampstead village and Heath are superb and there are terrific views over London from Parliament Hill. Take the Tube down to Canary Wharf as well and enjoy the Blade Runner-like architecture. The Tate Modern is always worth a visit.

London is the home of the open-top, hop-on/hop-off tour bus!

By the way, if you go down to the Tower Bridge, take a wander in to St Katharine Docks. There's a marina there & plenty things to photograph.

Off to London myself next month for a match. Normally I do it in a day but this time I intend to make a weekend out of it. Gives me an opportunity to give the cameras a good tester.

Well the hop on hop off bus is a good idea but i did London last year on a budget as in 50 pounds for the day (that was including a ticket for a west end show) so the hop on hop off bus was a no no for me.I cant remember how much it cost im sure they have a website of some sort
Also dont forget that most places of interest in London have an entry fee and for some great photo ops dont forget the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace.I know that happens in the morning at some time

personally speaking, i'd avoid the usual touristy spots; you'll just end up getting photos which look like everyone else's touristy photos - i'd head to places like highgate cemetery and the like.

If you're there next Tuesday evening, check out my exhibition in the Royal Acadamy

Go Fajitas! What time is it on? I'm there next Wed for work, might be able to get over Tuesday evening if this is open late?

As to London - if you are out early and/or late, you'll want a tripod for the city type shots. I know it's obvious, but check with who your flying with to see if you can bring it - BA have a rule of 1 carry on, and 1 checked in bag. (though I think that is supposed to change to 2 carry on's from this week). If you are not bringing one, bring a small bean bag.

I know it's a bit overdone, but the walk from the London's Eye to tower bridge is good too. That was one of my favourite stamping grounds a few years ago when I had a few evenings to kill in London.

    Merv.

It's part of a book on Irish fashion etc etc etc...

lots of good advice there - i was there in Oct last - we were blessed with the weather, one of my fave places was speakers corner in Hyde park, Sunday morning - great for people photography.
I think the bus tour hop on hop off was 7/8 pounds stg. but it included a Thames boat excursion which afforded a slightly different angle photography wise!!

Lots of street photography in the likes of Oxford st. Trafalger sq - Picadilly etc. I did travel on the Tube but i didn't try and raise a 30D to my eye down there :o a small P&S would be good for the Tube :)

went to the Imperial War Museum where photography is allowed if your into tanks and guns and stuff!! St. Pauls Cathederal is another fave - although no photography allowed inside but you can use a camera on the observation sections!

oh! and have a great time :)

Go on Al..... good luck with the exhibition!!!! :)

Checkout the new St Pancras station, very impressive engineering and would certainly make for some excellent shots. London is a wonderful city for photography, you could find something of interest on every street corner. When I lived there one of my fav things to do was head off on a London Walk (guided tours). There are so many to choose from and you really do get to see parts of the city that you might never find otherwise. It's nice to learn something about the places you might walk past everyday as well! Walks are probably only practical if you have a few days there though, as you will want to see other things. My fav was always the Jack the Ripper walk through Whitechapel, or Shakespeare's London around the Globe area (another great spot for shots).

+1 for the Imperial War Museum as well, a favourite of mine, and if you are interested in that kind of thing, and if you have a little bit of time, take a trip to the RAF museum at Hendon, really really worth a visit. Not too often you would get a chance to walk inside the bomb hold of a Lancaster bomber ;)

I think most of the main attractions have been mentioned already, the usual tourist spots around Westminster etc, but I would def checkout a few of the historical rail/underground attractions while you make your way around.

If you can find a tourist information point and ask for a brochure on "London Walks", as far as I remember the Ripper walk leaves from the Tower of London, outside the tube station, and walks to Whitechapel. Its an evening walk, usually around 8pm, you finish off in the Ten Bells pub where all the victims used to drink, fantastic wee pub actually, full of newspaper clippings etc on the walls. Prob good idea to get someone to go on the walk with you, the walk from the Ten Bells to Whitechapel tube at the end of the night can be a little eerie after all the gruesome details of the evening ;)

    Enjoy
