Hey Guys - I got this external usb harddrive which used to power down after 5 mins - which was fine except it slowed down the main harddrives by insisting on waking up even if only the main drives were being opened from "my computer". This used to drive me insane in windows. Under linux - the drive would go AWOL.
Anyway I solved that problem under Ubuntu by disabling that powerdown setting on the harddrive controller on the usb harddrive.... now it never interupts the other drives. (using the sdparm command).
sdparm -al /dev/sdb1 # check for STANDBY condition - its likely = 1

sdparm -c STANDBY -6 /dev/sdb1 # turn off stand by mode

sdparm -al /dev/sdb1 # STANDBY should be turned now

Then I had to save hdd wear and tear by pulling out the usb to "power it down". But now I just disable/enable the usb port "USB Mass Storage Device" the drive uses instead. Works a treat.

Posted this just in case anyone is demented from opening a pausing "my computer" which insists on waking the external drive even when not using it directly.
