ive been holding off buying a HD console for a long time, but the recent purchase of a HDTV has got my mouth watering.

PS3 is the console i want (HDMI and BluRay are selling points)
upcoming releases of GTA, SH5 and MGS4 mean i want to have my console at the ready :)

    HOWEVER!!!111sssoooz0r
i havent b een following the life of PS3 in much detail so it seems like i've missed the boat in terms of getting a "good" one (BC + HDMI)

is there an upcoming release of an upgraded PS3 that i should hang on for?
i dont want to buy a 40gB model thats missing vital features only for a 100gB with BC and HDMi to appear on the market next month.

or should i just hop on ebay and get one of the older models?

Basically, the ps3 just recently had its price reduction so therefore i highly doubt you will see it falling any further in the near future. The rescaled 40g model is whats out there now as the model released first (60g i think) has been pulled off production.Currently you will get some decent deals on the ps3 in the sales so my advice would be to get one now.
Not only is it a hd console but it also provides a blu ray player which some would think is worth getting it alone as they cost quite abit atm and will be the next gen video format as its only competitor will probably crumble in the not too distant future.

Every ps3 ever made had a hdmi port if you're wondering, the hdmi port that is, you still have to go out and buy the cable which is about a tenner. As for BC every1 will have forgotten about ps2 games in about a year- the ps3 will have the games collection it should have had from the start

thanks guys, i thought one of the ps3 models didnt support hdmi?
but that answers one question anyway.

i am interested in BC however, as i have a large collection of ps2 games which i dip into regularly, along with the huge catalog of games availble second hand in gamestop etc.

is it very likely that sony will never release a BC compatilble PS3 in europe?

ive been googling a fair bit, the us 80gb has features that no euro console ever had, if its that one ill be buying it.

are you sure thats the one they will release here and not just the 40gB console with an 80gB drive?

Just to clarify on the 80GB ,I recently had to bring back my ps3 to HMV .
I was offered a 40GB or after christmas an 80GB.

The manager told me that ,he wasn't sure exactly when the 80GB was being released ,but it would be a while after christmas.

I wasn't going to hang around until then ,so the 40GB did.

I heard that the 80g isn't coming out in PAL regions although i may be misinformed.

    there won't be an 80 and a 120,
ps3 take standard get them any where sata laptop hdd.
if you ever put one in to a laptop it's like putting an over sized card in a camera.

one of them may release here but not both we might get the 80 as the u.s get the 120

the u.s 80 does have BC it's a larger hdd version of our ps3 with the partial software BC, there get that and the same 40 as us

the launch 20gb did not have a hdmi port in the u.s it did in japan
but every ps3 you can get now has it

There is absolutely nothing announced as far as an 80 gig console goes in Europe

There might eventually be one, but we just don't know, Sony haven't announced anything. There's an 80 gig one in the US and has been for quite a while but Sony have been completely silent on future plans for Europe.

As far as Europe goes, there's the 60 gig model which has Backwards Compatibility but has been disconued, and the 40 gig model which has no backwards compatibility.

There's some other minor differences like number of USB ports and memory card readers, but nothing important. HDMI and Wireless is standard on both models.

If you want a 60 gig you'll really need to turn to ebay at this stage. I would recommend one because backwards compatibility is great to have and I still like occasionally dipping into great PS2 games like SOTC on my PS3.

Oh and in general, I would never take what a manger at HMV or Gamestop or Xtravision or whatever says to mean anything. They're usually guessing and have no inside info that wouldn't appear in the games media just as quickly.

my ps2 gives me all the backwards compatibity i need for the moment ;)

Sony organise the collection, repair it, and drop it back to you, AFAIK.
