Does anyone know if the European working time directive will be enforced for docs in Ireland? It's starting this year in the UK and will be legally enforced in 2009. I'm just worried that I won't be as skilled a doc as I hope to be with 48 hour weeks *sob*

embrace the 48 hour week, dude. Your life is more important than your job. I've only just learned that recently. You probably won't be as skilled as someone who's been qualified the same amount of time as you,but was working 120 hours per week, but so what, you'll still be able to manage.

Only prob with EWTD when I worked in the UK, where it's been in place partially for a few years, is that your day is split into, say, 8 hour shifts.

So someone works 8am-4pm, then someone works 4pm-midnight, then someone works midnight-8am.

So, basically 2 out of every 3 shifts you work in acute specialties, like ICu and A+E are antisocial. But a lot of these specialties have been like that for ages anyway.

If you're on a general ward though, it's happy days....in theory

And, if you're that concerned about it, don't worry. Management thnk of all kinds of ways to circumvent it. You just get paid for less hours. I rarely did less than 70 hours a week, even though we could legally only do 56 hours. It just meant 14 hours were unpaid.

When you put it that way...:) I was talking to an intern a while back who told me he had worked 92 hours that week. His breathing was very heavy (like he was sleeping while working). Do you think it'll come into effect here? I'm wondering is that one of the reasons why they're increasing the no. of med school places by so much.
