Road Death Statistics - 2007

29 fewer deaths from last year which gave total deaths for 2007 of 336 dead.

Only 1961 and 2003 were safer years with a total of 335 dead in both years.

Considering the inceases in number of cars and population, its safe to say that 2007 was far far safer than 1961 and marginally safer than 2003.

Hence, 2007 has been the safest year on Irish roads since records began.

No one seems to know this though. I've found one single link on the internet specifying this. The average man on the street seems to think that road deaths have gone through the roof and that of late we are expieriencing our worst number of road deaths ever.

Of course, the statistics say otherwise.

Don't let the facts get in the way of a good hand-wringing. ;)

It has been covered on the electronic media to be fair. But you just know if 5 people (esp youngsters) get wiped out over a weekend it'll be the usual media-nonsense on Monday.
