Ok folks, the cold (very cold) and wet weather is upon us.

So, what do you wear??? Gloves?

I've wet weather gear, including wet pants which keep me nice and warm. But, the fingers tend to get cold. I have fingerless gloves/mits, but they don't do the job.

    Any ideas?

Driving gloves? You can get a light/soft leather glove for driving and may be suitable for photography.

I have a pair of neoprene gloves. Cost about €25 but they are warm and tight so you can still operate the camera.

Plus you can get those little chemical hand warmers to put inside the gloves.

For most of the photography I've done this season I've worn a suit....

Otherwise, it'd be a pair of pants with plenty of pockets, warm fleece lined hoody and p'raps wooly hat... Thought about getting one of those super cool photo vests, but I reckon I'm not cool enough for one of those just yet.

I have a pair of shooters neoprene gloves that allow the index and middle fingers and thumb to poke out of a holes. Great when you need to do fiddly things.

I try to avoid going out in such weather to be honest.

I was shooting in the water last November twelve months. This year, that just did not happen.

I do occasionally wear a wetsuit though.

Someone posted a few months back about a shop that sells good waterproof gear at reduced prices.

Can anyone remember the place ?

That's actually what I have. Very good normally, but when at a sports event, and you're taking a lot of photos, the finger tips get a bit chilly.

    My search continues.

i just wear anything really., you can get neoprene gloves in angling shops and i think argos has them in the angling section, there very warm and you can poke your fingers out of them incase you need to do something fiddley.,

Quackles - those look so good, especially for cold weather.

I might check out those neoprene gloves and see what they're like. They'd have to fit well, and still work for all the camera bits.

just ordered the waistcoat mainly out of curiosity. Sitting in cold damp football grounds and freezing my bits off doesn't sound appealing, usually have an Under Armour top and 2-3 layers with fingerless gloves.

I buy liner gloves from my local army bargain store. They are thin inner gloves that are meant to go inside thicker ones. But they keep your hands warm enough on their own and are thin enough so you can operate camera controls with ease. I keep losing them, but they are cheap enough to just buy another pair.

Another great idea is silk sock liners that go on over your socks and give you another layer over your feet without making your footwear too tight. They are great when photographing outdoor sports events like matches during the winter. Toasty warm toes!

their pretty good fitting and their not bulky or anything, I use them for fishing a lot of the time and involves threading hooks etc.,

Had a similar discussion a while back in outdoors persuits about what type of clothing to be wearing outdoors (considering Irelands attrocious weather cycles..) I whole heartedly recommend any piece of clothing by Arc'teryx. You will pay more than any other brand but I believe there quality to be far superior to The North Face etc. It's Case of layering up really when you go out , if its a rough day its usually Sprayway goretex jacket, goretex boots and over pants plus a nice glove liner then a water proof glove over that!
No such thing as bad weather, just the wrong type of clothing.

I Have a pair of neoprene gloves "Ice behr" bought them in Rorys tackle in Temple bar for fishing that have fold back tips for your thumb and two fingers.
    They are excellent.

make sure you have whiskey with you :) you won't need gloves.. (or your camera if you drink enough of it)

I just like my comforts. :D

I've been browsing and it seems that there are different options out there.
    LowePro Photographer Gloves
    Cycle Gloves
    Shooting Gloves

Or the many other options listed here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,547 ✭✭✭City-Exile

    Those LowePro gloves are terrible!
I tried them on in England & they are far too thick to press the small menu buttons.

As Rab C Nesbitt once remarked '20 fags and a sarcastic expression'

Buffalo Mitts are fantastic. Pertex over pile and thin enough that you can operate a camera and tie knots in rope etc without taking them off. Kept me warmer than Goretex/fleece mitts at -42 C

They've only got mittens in their catalogue.
Mittens wouldn't be any good for me anyway.

I have a pair of windstopper gloves that I picked up in a golf shop. They are meant for use as golf gloves but they work pretty well for my photography.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 116 ✭✭tnkrbell

Havent been out much this winter to photograph due to stupid college work (come on now assignments to do during christmas)but when i did go out it was ski jacket, fingerless gloves which surprisingly kept my hands warm, scarf, hat and wellies
Oh and I find a bf as well usually keeps you warm during the cold ;)

Do they actually sell them in a pair, or did you just match a left & a right?

I know I'm new here and I don't have a lot of experience spending time out in the cold with a camera, I do ride a motorcycle so to battle to keep warm is not strange to me.
What I have learned from others and experience is that, no gloves will keep your hands warm if your torso gets cold and if you keep your body warm then the lite-est of gloves work fine.
The best way I have found to achieve this is with many layers, more light layers work better than fewer heavy and when it gets really cold or you'll be out for a long time you must find a way to add heat.
ie: go somewhere warm / use heated clothing

My electric heated vest arrived today from Maplin, they say it's yellow on the site but the 2 that arrived today are black. Nice fit and just the weather to try it out.
