what does people think of lil wayne, i have to say, im a big fan since tha carter & i have been watching over the last few years how big he is getting..
He seems to be the biggest rapper in America apart from jay z and eminem.

im eagerly waiting for tha carter 3. if its anything like tha carter 1& 2 it should get 5 mics in the source or a XXL ratings.

opinions & views more than welcome.

I love him. Hes the type of MC you either love hiim or hate him , there seems to be no inbetween with him.

Vol 7 was a serious mixtape.

Lil wayne seems to produce his best stuff when its not aimed at the masses. His lyrical quality really shows on the mix tapes and obviously the carter records( look up his version of man-eater). Not a huge fan of him when he features on the likes of wyclefs new single. Never really liked him untill i listened to his like father like son album. Jumped at the chance to see him in the states not to long ago and it was jaw droppingly good. Very few shows ive seen come close to his show in terms of energy, crowd hype, not relying on his 'usual' set and not using 50 other members of cash money on stage!

    Just my 2c.

I can't really get aroiund his voice.

Getting a good score in the source/XXL is something to be ashamed.

i agree with Chicken Food, his mixtape stuff can be just incredible, i like his comercial stuff but its not his strong point, like his verse on Sweetest Girl the Wyclef song, its ok but nothing special.

    lil wayne is lil annoying.

    Too much southern rap now.

Lets move on up the coast again.

Eh, he's ****e, it's not even real hiphop, it's ****ing pop music.

He makes songs for 14 year old girls.

Grow a pair and get some taste lads, seriously.

I've heard a couple of his tracks that were good, Georgia Bush is savage. But I've never gotten around to listening to any of his CD's because there are so bloody many of them. He releases some amount of stuff.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 228 ✭✭conormurphy

Weezy is wack, check him out like for real, I dont mean, put on two of the tracks and start thinking "I like that" I mean really listen to his music and you will realise your wasting your time, I mean the dude wacked Gillie but apart from that, noone can respect him, what is he? Hes nothing

Despise him, only have to look at his album titles to realise he's a ****... :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,478 ✭✭✭Bubs101

People on this thread are being incredibly harsh. Tha Carter II is a phenomenal album with much fewer fillers than most rap albums and more scope and ambition than any rapper his age. Also really admire the amount of stuff (quality stuff aswell) that he releases for free.

As for The Carter III, personally, I think it's a good album but not quite as good as 2, but having said that I've only listened to it 3 times. Anybody else get it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,505 ✭✭✭nevaeh-2die-4

i have to say the carter 3, is a great album well better that curtis.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,460 ✭✭✭Orizio

C3 is a boring album, and eating horse **** is more fun then listening to Curtis.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 888 ✭✭✭tdc

LOL @ "better than curtis" - 50 Cent is a joke, first album was good, thanks to Dre and Em - the rest is terrible. I think he would be more concerned about his new deoderant than his music though...

Lil' Wayne is a decent rapper, for sure he is the biggest in the US at the moment. Have only heard a couple of tracks of Carter III but they were all fairly good. Wayne is set to make a couple of appearances on the Games new LAX album, thats the one Im really waiting for.

Lads this is the hip-hop forum. We like to talk about real artists. No Lil Wayne discussions please! Go and listen to some real music and come back.

Judging by your 3 posts it's quite clear that you don't like to talk at all. Most of you making these criticisms about Wayne haven't even listened to his albums. You can get one of the best for free. Da Drought 3 is a free download, just wikipedia it and follow the links.

Tha Carter III after a few listens is another great rap album from Wayne, the second one in a row. For some reason the people on this board despise him but I recommend that you give him a chance. The critics are united, not only rap critics but indie ones as well. The usually snobbish pitchfork hailing him. Jay Z thought enough of him to duet with him on this in what can quite clearly be construed as a passing the torch moment. I can understand how some of his arrogance could put people off (best rapper alive comes to mind) but he is brilliant. He is also trying to change some of the usual staples of rap music. Tha Carter III has none of the cringeworthy skits that are ever present on rap albums (the only thing that could be construed as a skit is one of the highlights of the album, Dr. Carter). Just give him a fair crack of the whip before rushing to condemn him

The fact that Pichfork likes the album doesn't help your cause. The vast majority of the albums Pitchfork enjoy are terrible - listen to the likes of No Age, Titus Andronicus, **** Buttons etc if you don't believe me. Pitchfork is by and large a joke.

C3 is just boring beat wise, and lil Wayne sounds like a retard.

Pitchfork was just an example. I'm sure if you checked metacritic there are other examples of magazines that normally look down on rap giving it goos reviews, and if you think that the beats are boring, the fact that Lil Wayne gets so much out of them is even more impressive. If you think the beats are boring, check out a mixtape. If you think he sounds retarded then you'll never be won over

His voice is annoying, his lyrics are irritating and he embodies the bubblegum pop vomit aspect that hip hop has turned into. How can you like him? Don't understand how he is getting so big but it's prob doen to 14 yr old girls buying his albums. Terrible artist.

For the posters defending Lil Wayne. Lads ye have to check out some real hip-hop. I'm talking about artists like Mos Def, Royce Da 5'9", Afu-Ra, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface, Redman, MF Doom, Keith Murray. Lil Wayne is lowest common denominator stuff!

I think we should be careful about using this word....it sparked a major boo-hoo on another thread in Hip-Hop!

I've just read that he's gone platinum in week 1 of Get Carter III.

To be honest, I never would have listened to Lil Wayne because of his stuff I've heard in the past....talking about his tracks/appearances when he was 12!

But, I was in Botswana recently (get the map out!) and my driver out there was bumping Lil Wayne everywhere we went and I slowly found that I started to like him. Not enough to go out an buy his record, but made me appreciate that he is listenable and that I can see how he has a huge uber mega fan base.

Tried to give Lil Wayne a chance a while back but really don't rate him as a rapper at all. I also think a lot of his guest appearances on albums come off as someone who couldn't give a **** what he's saying. Having said that was reading The Ticket this morning and the reviewer who generally talks a lot of sense gave a glowing review of the '3 peat' single off the album. Haven't heard it yet, but going to get the album later and have a listen. Best tracks off the album??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,807 ✭✭✭speedboatchase

    Best tracks:

    3-Peat
    Comfortable
    Mr Carter
    A Milli
    Shoot Me Down
    Mrs Officer

Tis a pretty good album, some tracks just don't work for me at all but for 10.99 in HMV it was worth a pop

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,478 ✭✭✭Bubs101

Disagree with the best tracks there. I would have the following as the top 5 songs in it

    Dr. Carter
    Lollipop
    Let the Beat Build
    Shoot Me Down
    and Tie My Hands.

Personally, I'd get number II first

seriously guys what the appeal of this guy, i can't get my head round it. maybe i'm starting to get old or something. to me Lil Wayne has got one of the most annoying voices in the rap game and he raps are about nothing. he's verse on the remix of Busta's "Don't Touch Me" makes no sense whats so ever. one of the lines go something like this "i'm a venerial desease, like a menstail bleed" then theres the verse bout the seasons hating on him from "Mr Carter" and don't even get me started on his verse on a Billi with Jigga! he's an awful, awful rapper, Ice T blames Soulja Boy for killing hip hop, i think Weazy has been helping him out to.

and if u want to listen to some HIP HOP check out Orizios post both an artist called Kam Mole, u won't be disappointed!

I'm a venereal disease like a menstrual bleed...
Threw the pencil and leak the sheet of the tablet in my mind,

that verse is from a milli which is basically a freestlye and it has no chorus.people on here hate anything commercialised and love everything underground but they seem to forget people like lil wayne started off underground.you have to work to make it to the top.he started off as poor as every other rapper out there.i found it tough at first to get used to him so you should give him another chance.heres a few examples then you can judge

I very much doubt that was a freestyle....

People on here hate commercial and love underground???? No its just taht i don't like Lil' Wayne. What's the problem with that. I had actually decided not to post about Lil'Wayne again but then was listening to the new Scarface album on the way to work and he was on one of the tracks with Bun B and Scarface and didn't think his style or verse worked well at all. Also, i can't remeber what the line was now, something about earthquakes and he giggles after the line as to how impressed he is with himself, its ridiculous. The chap can't hold a candle to Scarface in terms of flow or lyrics.

And for the record i think Lil'Wayne comes up with some geat lines in songs but generally in between them its garbage... IMO:cool:

i understand people saying they dont like his style but i hate people saying hes crap because he has got talent you either love him or hate him no in between.i hate people saying hes commercial rubbish.i agree with you hes generally poor in other peoples songs he needs his own beat.i respect your opinion because you gave him a chance most people dont.

I dont think that alot of the posters on here try to differentiate between commercial and underground. I think we try to base our opinions on what we like and what we dont like, what sounds good and what doesnt.
An example of this is over on the thread/poll for best albums of 08. There are votes there for Q-Tips Rennaisance which if was to be catagorised would be a commercial artist. This is topping the poll along with Carter III albeit with only 2 votes a piece :)

I personally am not a fan of Wayne, i'll listen to him but wont go out and buy his records. I dont think that he is doing anything creatively that couldnt be done by a lot of other artists. I also think that he overuses the word 'like'. Too many simile's.

fair enough i respest your opininon BUT you cant say hes not talented people say hes killing hip hop but in my eyes hes creating a new stlye.you should listen to the links i posted some good songs there.i can never find some underground stuff.i dont know where to look.how do yous find them.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 25,734 Mod ✭✭✭✭Boom_Bap

I'm not saying he is the most talented man alive, and he is not untalented. He has a nice flow on some songs (and i did listen to the links you posted :)) but he is just not consistent enough. And i said earlier, overuse of simile's, this is why i cant listen to Ice Cubes latest album or a lot of 'underground' artists because they are foraging for the perfect puchline. I like things to be more creative.

In relation to finding new stuff, posters on here offer some great tips on who to check out. Since i came on here i have been opened up to alot more artists. What i generally would do is pick up a name from here and look for them on myspace and listen to what they are like. If you like, dig little deeper on them. There is also a sticky about recommendded websites in the Hip Hop forum, look there and you will see some new names and try get a listen to thier stuff.
Even let us know who you are into (besides Lil Wayne :) ) and people here will make recommendations for you.

as i said i cant find "underground" artists so im stuck on commercialised i like the game he has good beats and his voice suits rap but he name drops too much.i like the usual tupac etc.ill use this board to find more artists.the only "underground" i know are irish like redzer and thats cause you hear his name mentioned in dublin.before this board my only way of finding songs was youtube and i dont know who to search for part from the commercialised rappers.

As boom bap says, have a check round the forum here there are a good few recommendations that are worth checking out to see if your into them. Think Orizio and Jay Ru on here also come up with some interesting artists that are worth a listen.

Generally if check something out from here and think its good will go check out artists on the album that i think sound good or other artists on the same label (i recommend high speed broadband :D). Recently been listening to a lot of hip hop which generated from listening to Elzhi - The Preface (highly recomend a listen) and then through other artists in the same group, detroit hip hop (i think) and especially Black Milk who does a lot of production on the album... Really a knock on effect after that.

Some good albums mentioned in this thread here http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055328514

I'd particularly recomend the Murs album and then check out his old stuff he's done with 9th wonder if ya are into that

Maybe even look into Atmosphere's album called When Life Gives You Lemons You Paint That **** Gold. It's is a fairly accesible album, if you like then dig into thier back catalogue. They are on a label called RhymeSayers which have some other good artists too. Black Milk and Elzhi are worth looking into too. And Murs for defo.
There is a new thread of the Chop Shop Top 30 of this year, some good stuff there.
Cant think of anything else right now...actually Blu and Exile, MF DOOM, Camp Lo...should keep you going for a while!

EDIT: It's actually Blu, not Exile...the producer is a guy called Mainframe

If Lil Wayne is the biggest rapper in the world right now (and CD sales suggest as much) then that's a very good thing considering the state of the game. For this decade 50 Cent/Nelly and rappers of that ilk were the biggest so I'm glad to see a workaholic like Weezy who gives more to the underground than any other commercial artist get his dues
