    Broken Bones

I broke my big toe in 3 parts two weeks ago and have a cast on my whole leg for the next two weeks. Has anyone every had experience with breaking bones?
I dont plan on running for another month at least to let it heal properly as I dont want problems in the future, but I am not sure what it will be like once I get the cast removed...
Any Ideas, how long do you think it will be before its back the way it was before???

    Thanks

    hey

sorry to hear about your toe. I broke my toe a good few years back but to be honest by the time the swelling sorted itself out the toe had healed and I had no major problems. I was is in my teens at the time so I probably healed quicker then than I would now.

I would take a very gentle approach when starting back. I would recommend an x-ray to confirm it is completely healed.Make sure there is no pain at all and stick to grass etc.

I have broken other bones around my body that have stopped me from running. I usually hit the gym and find the air walkers helpful as there is no impact with the ground so you can maintain some level of fitness.

Your biggest problem may be scar tissue. If you are going to be in a cast for 4 weeks, this will cause the joints to get very stiff as scar tissue forms. Try moving the foot as much as possible with tiny minute movements in the cast. tThis keeps the muscles toned, and also moves the joints a small amount and will reduce the build up of scar tissue.

I have had a broken toe in the past, but following an xray diagnosis, the course of action taken was rest, but no cast was applied and both times it healed on its own. It was very painful, I remember that!! In 1986 I broke my middle toe the week before the national juniors, and still won the gold... but the pain was unbelievable. 2 weeks later I was back running again.

The big toe is more serious as it does a lot of work when you run / walk.
