My 360 died a few days ago so I've dug out the ps2 again. I'm gonna try to play though some ps2 classics that I never got round to. Playing through Metal Gear Solid 2 at the moment - €5.99 in Gamestop and effin brilliant! So the games I hope to get through this month are :

    Resident Evil 4
    MGS3 Subsistence
    Psychonauts
    God of War 2
    Okami

Any other ps2 classics that I might have missed out on? (I've played all the GTA games and I'm not too fond of racing games). Look forward to hearing recommendations.

MGS was one of my faves back in the day. Gran Tourismo was another big game. Also, I know the PC heads will slate me for this but I loved Half Life on the Ps2.

I've played some of the Hitman games and Shadow of the Colossus. I'll defo check out ICO though. It's still €30 on play.com - for a 7 year old game! There's a few copies on ebay , think I'll go that route.

    Cheers and keep them coming!

It's a good game alright, but just like the DMC series, the second game was a bit crap in comparison to the others...

I'm going to keep saying this in the hope that some people will actually listen to me. Gradius V is dirt cheap is is far and away the best game on the PS2.

Highly recommend the Prince of Persia games especially the first one. The second game is actually rather good it's just the dark tone is a bit jarring. The third game makes everything good again.

Godhand is excellent as well if you give it a chance. Probably the funniest game ever.

Have to agree that all the games listed are excellent except Killzone which is boring generic pish.

Rogue Trooper is a bit more obscure but excellent. Don't think God of War II will be cheap for a while. I picked it up two weeks ago for €45 second hand! Good game and worth the price though ;)

Add Gradius V to that list or I'll kill a kitten.

Also you should get Prince of Persia 1 before you get PoP 2 since it's a far better game.

Saw it for €25 in harvey norman in Naas yesterday evening - 50% off bin

Haha retro! I don't have the twitch reflexes needed for games like Gradius any more. You're not able to play those games if you're over the age of 25... I never did like cats anyway.

Ok, I got Resident Evil 4 , Mercenaries and Canis Canem Edit all for €36 which I reckon is pretty good value. Gaming feels so much better when you're not handing over €60 for each game:)

id have to agree about the genric feel of killzone. Doesn't add anything to the genre, however it was well put together and i did quite like the last couple of levels. still not really worth imo.

Killzone is definately worth it. Its a decent shooter worth playing.

Freedom Fighters - best 3rd party shooter on the ps2, with good squad management and a great story line to boot. Surprised they never made a sequel.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein - fighting the nazis and the undead, this game just went on and on and on. You get your money's worth compared to a lot of more modern games that you can finish in a day or 2 - COD4, Resistance anyone? I love those games btw - just way too short. Probably cause they want to leave plenty of story for a sequel (I.e. Resistance) and COD4 is an online game with a short single player section to train you.

Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City. Great way to let off steam by beating the crap out of or shooting passers by.:D

Half Life - classic game that was so good, I bought it for my pc as well. Its an icon in gaming that everyone should play at least once.

Metal Gear Solid 2 was great but the overdone cut scenes took away from the game as they broke the action up so much. I usually went for a snack while these were playing (they were that long!!!) as I wasn't interested in the hyped up storyline. The stealth action and combat were good though.

The Thing - based on the cult movie by John Carpenter. Fantastic game that like Wolfenstein went on and on and on. Fighting monsters in the antarctic with a brilliant story line as well. The only downside is that the save points are far apart and getting killed after progressing so far and having to redo the level was a little frustrating but I'd buy it again it was so good.

I'm nearly 25 and if anything I'm getting better at these games. You also don't understand, it's by far the best damn shoot'em up ever created. Trust me you won't be disappointed. There's also an easy mode if you want to wuss out :)

Ok retro. I'll give it a go if I can find it cheap. I'm still doubtful about the reflexes though. I'm pretty good at most games but these type of games I struggle with. Tried geometry wars but that was a nightmare. Ever given that one a go?

Yeah I've tried that, loved it but it's a completely different beast to what Gradius V is. Gradius V is really quite manageable and never throws an impossible amount of bullets at you like the bullet hell games or geometry wars type games. Also don't go by the videos on youtube, they are all of experts playing the game on extremely high loops (each time you beat the game it gets tougher) and the game just looks way more ridiculously tough than it really is.

Just have to say that if you liked the MGS games you really should hunt down Zone of Enders 2: Second Runner. It's a real underrated classic. It looks stunning and plays like a dream. Don't bother with the dull first game.

Agreed - a brilliant game, with some amazing battles - taking down 4 huge battleships in a flying mech, whilst being attacked by loads of drones, with a gun the size of a tank that takes 20 secs to charge and fire!!! Sweet!!!

This guy makes it look easy (not great quality video..):

Can be hard to find though - don't see it too often in trade in shops...

All mech games should handle like ZoE - pure brilliance...

Damn, for the first time ever, I wish I hadn't given away my ps2...

I'll always have the memories, and hopes for ZoE3

I would recommend timesplitters 2 over 3, Ts 2 was just amazing and you could probably get it a good bit cheaper than that.

Try some of the Ratchet and Clank games aswell.:)

    Jak3- like GTA except "cuter"
    Ace Combat 6
R-type final - ultra rock hard though.

R-type Final is a pretty awful game by the genres standards. Dull level design, horrendous game destroying slowdown and just really dull and unimaginative. Gradius V is a infinitely better.
