Taking the plunge for a mac book pro

    Hello all.

I've decided recently to buy a mac book pro, and im thinking im going to spend the extra cash on getting 4gigs of ram as i plan to use it in conjunction with FCP ,After Effects etc. and id like to limit the amount of time i spend waiting for stuff to render.

My question is to you mac users is as follows; Any way i can get it cheaply?:)

I'm planning on claiming back the VAT, so that'll make the hit on the wallet a little less painful, but I'm also told that you can get a student discount (and i luckily still know a good few of those student types) of roughly 10%... is that still true? Can't find anything about it on the apple website. I was told to wait till the end of January as apple stores run some discounts on hardware after the apple conference this month

Any advice would be, as usual, greatly appreciated!

I dont know about the student discount thing. I thought that was only a temporary offer that they run every now and again.

I would wait until after the expo this month as its highly likely that changes will be occurring in their laptop range. This could include new additions to the range or just an upgrade depending on what rumors you choose to believe. It could also mean that there may be discounts available on the "older" models, after the new ones are released.

yeah the education discount is still available: http://store.apple.com/Catalog/irl/Images/routingpage.html

Other than that i think you'd be better fitting the additional RAM yourself and definetily waiting til after January to buy.

Unless you are crazy, do not buy a MBP with 4GB RAM from Apple. They will rob you blind. Buy the RAM yourself and fit it. There's even a writeup on the Apple website on how to fit RAM yourself. I would also wait until Macworld 2008 has come and gone.

I recently got a replacement MBP under warranty and bought four Gigs from Crucial, £80 including P&P so i;m guessing about €125-135. Apple by the way were charging close to 400.

And my way left me with 2 gig to give to my brother for his new macbook

i'm getting a MBP too, but wait until macworld (another 2 weeks) before buying because the mpb is due an update... don't want to be out of touch with your new toy after a week!

Good god no, I demand my toys to be at their shiniest and newest as much as possible!:D

Good to know that extra ram can be installed easily and cheers for that education link, over €100 knocked of the price already which is niiiiice, though i shall take the advice and wait till after the expo going crazy...

You can't get the student discount and claim VAT back.

I'd wait 2 weeks.......keynote is on the 15th. I'd buy maybe a week after that to make sure they don't slip out a refresh if the keynote doesn't deliver something big.

+1 for the non-Apple RAM upgrade

I only bought mine in August and I remember paying 260eur or so for them on crucial.com but I could be wrong. Price is now 138eur here.
It is extremely easy to do so no reason for hesitation!
