how can you get texture into your canvas painting?

i know you get texture with the brushmarks in oil paint, but i dont want to use oil (i actually like to use plain household emulsion, which can be flat),

im assuming its something put on to the canvas and left to dry before painting, anyone know how to achieve this?
also im hoping to do somthing in red and yellow, but what paint can i use that will give me really vibrant colours?

To create texture you can mix sand and pva with the paint or apply the sand pva mixture directly to the canvas and allow to dry. You can use any number of things to create texture as long as it is bonded in pva or directly mixed in paint...

Sand, wood chips, rice, pasta etc; etc; wallpaper paste is good too!!

I've used polyfilla to do this before... get a good linseed oil to dilute the filler a bit, makes its more mallable and helps when adding the paint to the texture solution!

Oh and tru using palette knives to paint with this mix its very effective!

i tried polyfilla before but it tended to flake off as in parts it was quite thick, mite try it with the linseed oil tho. any info on the paint? what would be the best type to use to give bright vibrant colour??

With this stuff you could almost use powdered pigment, then use the polyfilla and oil as your medium, mix it up and it should be quite vibrant colours yet retain that thick pasty consistency.

Pigment is great for vibrant colour as you can add as much as you need to create a powerful strong colour, but it should be ground in linseed oil.

If you want to use a tube of oil or acrylic use it neat. Remember if you mix it into a wet mixture it may lose some of its viberance and appear darker or lighter depending on mix.

I would prepare surface texture on canvas and allow it to dry, then Paint over with colour/s of your choice.

Experiment a bit with it before you put it on the canvas and you'll have a good idea then what works and what dosen't.

thanks for the reply artieanna! i left out the texture cos i really needed to paint today (it calms me, even if im no good at it!) so i just went at it with acrylics and low and behold it turned out just as i wanted it. no just one more question to pick your brains! when acrylics dry it tends to be quite matt, and i like a semi sheen finish. could i varnish it with something? or would that make a pigs ear out of it????:D

Yes there is varnish you can apply to acrylic's, it's a spray varnish and available in art shops. Its by windsor and newton I think and its craft varnish. Just be aware that it available in two types, permanant and semi permanant (can be removed) either is fine its around 15euro.

Do not use regular house varnish as it yellows and cracks over time.

AAAh I know the feeling and trust me, just having the passion for art is enough, the skill will come over time and you are probably better than you think...

if you feel like it post a pic of you work .... Love to see it

    Hey,

I am trying to put together an outdoor exhibition to show some up an coming artists work in the next 2/3 months. and am wondering if there is anyone else out there who would be intrested in it.

Basically i was thinking of getting a number of people to bring up to ten/ twelve pieces of there art along. And we would put them up on St. Stephens green.

Before you ask, its free, St. Stephens green is a public park. so we cannot be moved on. And under the Artists and writers treaty and exemption from tax on original pieces, they can be put on sale, without any tax/vat worries.

It is totally free, and i just wanted to get hidden talents around Dublin unlocked.

So, if it's pen and ink, Oil on Canvus, Acrylics, etc etc, why not show them off, and lets brighten up Dublin with art!!!

Anyone intrested, drop a response, or contact:

    crowleyniall@hotmail.com

    Many thanks
