Can you put a back seat in a commercial vehicle (jeep). What would be the story if you were stopped by guards, insurance etc.

No you can't. Vehicle could be seized if they were fitted.

Yes you can - you would just need to pay the balance of the VRT before you do it!

VRT, road tax, and insurance will all be affected.

Yes you can. Just as Kbannon said though:

there will be VRT, tax and insurance implications.

1 thing that you need to be very aware of is that the seatbelt mounting points are destroyed in the rear of a vehicle before it becomes commercial so I wouldn't let just anybody do your conversion if you're putting humans or heavy goods back there!!

He's not asking how to scam, he's asking if it can be done and the answer is yes once the correct procedures are followed!

You can buy a crew cab pick up or van - still classed as commercial.

i've no idea what an insurance company would have to say about it though. i mean the one of the main points of commercial conversion is that the seatbelt mounts are either removed, or the holes plugged with weld. now i cant imagine home made or non standard seatbelt mounts being very popular with insurance peoples

Once you mount seats in the back then it is no longer classed as a commercial vehicle (for insurance purposes this is). It can be, but there's always a higher rate of insurance and it will be classed at the higher rate.

Off the point but a commercial can be quiet easily converted back to passenger depending on who did the conversion. I have converted passenger to commercial and the mounts do not need to be welded. The mounts need to be removed and the area welded or bonded over. Seatbelts have to be removed too. All is reversible but as pointed out any seats placed in the back will change its status to passenger and the gardai and revenue take a dim view on this. So in answer to your Q..no. get something with passenger status.
