The difference between and amp and a DVD player

If you run a crap DVD play into a good amp, will you still get good sound out of the system or do you need a good DVD player as well?

My current LG player says it has Dolby Digital and DTS. Should I look for a player with prologic, or some other better format or is this what the amp is for?

DTS is best, then Dolby Digital, then prologic.

Now there is DTS HD, and DD HD too.

As to which component brings the overall quality down, think of it like a chain, which is only as strong as its weakest link.

The elements are AMP, Source, Speakers, Room Acoustics, then interconnects, speaker cable, power cable....

It's entirely personal preference as to weather a DD or DTS mix is best, they differ (often very little) but one isn't necessarily better than the other.

To get proper digital sound you need to connect the DVD player to the amp digitally, either using coaxial or optical. Analogue interconnects will only deliver Pro Logic at best.

unless you are using a 7/6/5.1 analogue output from your DVD player into a 7/6/5.1 input on your amplifier.

Of course you _could_ use audio over HDMI in certain circumstances, but as to the quality of this over other digital (or analogue as above) remains to be debated. Ask Arcam (pass through only) and Rotel (HDMI 1.1 [non hd] audio) for example.

Given the OP described their LG DVD player as "crap" I thought it safe to assume this wasn't an option.
