Recommend a canvas primer?

    Would a PVA solution be suitable for priming canvas (40%PVA 60%water?)

    if you are using oil paint you can size your canvas with rabbit skin glue or use gesso which will give you a white surface. don't use rabbit skin glue with
    Acrylic paint

    thanks, but I have a huge tub of that PVA solution and I wonder whether it will be any good as a canvas primer?

    I don't think it would work well because it'll make the surface hard and shiny and unreceptive to paint and defeat the purpose of working on canvas.

    No as the surface is too shiny, the paint will peel away from the surface when it dries. Try a 50/50 mix of pva and emulsion, its much better.
