Why is everything so expensive? (slight rant)

Now we all know that everything in regards to photography is expensive. Like today i went to Conns to buy a fisheye but their all around the 800 mark (if anyone knows of any cheaper ones please let me know). Now that's a lense so I can understand that, but then i went to Easons to buy a shed load of photogrpahy mags since it's hard to find them in your average spar. Only picked up two photoshop mags, which were over ten quid each. And their not even that big. How can people justify charging over a tenner for a magazine. Ok you get a CD with it but come on. Rant over.

    Niche market. Simple as.

If Canon/Nikon knew that they could sell a thousand fish eye lenses a day everyday for the next twenty years they could probably flog em off at 50 quid each and still turn a handy profit.

Same thing with the photo mags. They know they're selling to a specialised, non mass-market sector so they know they won't shift a huge amount. Hence the price creeps up.

I'm fully with you by the way. Practically every hobby I've ever had has cost me a bomb

I pick up 2/3 photography mags a month. I do however try to pick them up at England because the mark up on some magazines is ridiculous.

I'm envious of my Father's fishing hobby... a rod only costs aroung 40 euro and lasts for years...and we get to eat fresh fish :D

Try doing a deal with a local magazine shop ,I only pay around 7 euro for them in my local shop.

i agree, mags are way over priced., although i get mine free.,lol, i know someone that works in a news agent when the new editios come out they just cut the barcodes off the older one and throw it away., bit if a waste concidering the price of them.,

    ok first

for the fisheye, go on ebay and look for the Pelong fisheye lens, its manual russian thing but great lens.

for the mags, i do agree with a lot of them being much more than the cover price, but i guess its a bit like bying irish newspapers in the canaries

Thirdfox as for fishing, whoa, 40 quid aint anything like a lot to spend on a lens, I just sold most of my fishing gear. There was around 4K's worth, one of the fishing poles was 1K stg when it was new

I heard the pelongs were great for the price. Other than that pick up a Sigma 8mm fisheye off ebay.

Who is talking about Canaries? It is cheaper in Belfast! And as far as I remember road to Belfast, there are no bridges or ferries over any sea.
That reminds me that I should go there to buy something to read again... :-)

Compared to many other places, Ireland is more a niche market: The entire population of the Republic was just under 4 million at the time of the 2002 census, which is half the number of people who live in London alone.

You're clearly stuck in the past.

    - Buy lenses from other countries using the internet. Never, ever buy camera equipment at Dublin highstreet prices unless its an emergency.
    - There's enough material available online to keep you reading about photoshop for a thousand years. Plus videos, interactive tutorials etc. And its all free.

    Shops and magazines ftl.

Actually the way i choose is based on the percentage more expensive in dublin etc

if it less than 25% more expensive i will still buy local, I use my kit to earn a living and so if it breaks i want the support of the local supplier.

I'd take the same view Stephen...although I'm not earning such a living at the moment. argghh

I operate on a similar principle - if the local guys can come close enough to the online price I'll buy there.
Though as I don't earn a living at all the differential is a bit closer.

Yeah i agree with you there about buying online, but I got a voucher and whatnot so was going to see what I could get. Haven't had too much luck with some of the online tutorials I've found I must say. Can anyone recommend any sites actually?

Too many online tutorials are video tutorials. Me no likey. I'm better with books to be honest.

I quite liked Photoshop TV (now Photoshop user TV or something). Tis fairly light hearted but well presented. Photoshop Killer tips is great too. You can get them through itunes.

    Add
    filetype:pdf

to get a PDF document, when using Google. This way you can get a PDF document, instead of someone waffling.

    PDF Example
