Help with Poor Quality TV Picture

    Hi,
need some advice please. Just bought a Sony 3500x 46 inch TV, SOny AMP, Bose AM10 systems and blue ray DVD player. Didnt do enough research and was takne in by the high quality pictures being diaplayed in store which I now know were either DVD or SKY HD channels. Expected to get a good quality sharp picture with such a TV on ntl analogue. Anyway got NTL digitial installed and the picture quality still poor. Technicians from NTL have checked the cabling outside and inside house and also checked noise levels. Quality and strenght of signal excellent. Have gold plated scart leads and cable leads. Technician reckoned the digitial box may not be able to process enought signal for the high spec tele altough he suggested getting Sony engineer to check the installation of TV. Thinking about switching to SKY but at this point its money and more money and I am looking for some good advice from anyone who has had similiar problems. Picture hazy / fuzzy around players when watching soccer. You can see dark blocks on screen when images anyway dark.

    Questions
anyone got a 46 inch TV diaplying good sharp digital picture (not HD)
Is Sky digitial better than NTL and will this provide more / greater siginal to the TV than NTL box
Any suggestions would be very welcome

    very frustrated

sorry to read the frustration, I have a 55" fed from SkyHD via HDMI and the reception and picture quality is perfect on the likes of RTE, TV3, CH4, E4, BBC etc, gets a bit weaker with lower bitrate channels but still very good

I have a 46inch bravia with sky digital (not HD)
The picture quality was crap when i first got it setup, i even got really bad ghosting on some channels. I ended up calling sky and they did whetever they do on there end and the picture came in perfect and has been perfect ever since. I can only assume they tweaked the signal getting sent to me

    No.
You must have changed to HDMI or SCART instead of RF. Nothing changed at their end.

Analogue cable is very noisy and full of interference. Digital cable on better channels has higher and or recompression compared with Satellite, thus satellite is better.

They will have guided you through something - there is nothing they can do with the signal (which is a broadcast signal and is received identically by everyone); and theres nothing they can remotely do to the box, either.

I didnt change anything, while on the phone with sky they kept changing stuff and my reception got worse then better untill it was finally perfect, so they must be able to change things on there end

Believe us - they aren't able to change anything on their end... All 9+ million subscribers are getting the exact same signal.

My experience is that NTL digital signals have fuzzier pictures than satellite (Sky and non-Sky). I suspect that has nothing to do with inherent problems with digital cable technology, but with whatever NTL does to the source signals.

Apart from Setanta (which seems to have very inconsistent picture quality) the satellite pictures are much clearer and Sky HD is much better again. Given you have an excellent set-up of equipment, I'm sure you would see a marked improvement if you got Sky.

    Hi,
thanks for replying to my request. Have subscribed to Sky with HD package also. Installation due this Friday. Will revert with the quality of picture after this is done. Went into SONY store andaw very good quality on my TV with sky digital and as I understand its the same quality where ever you are so I am hopeful of a good outcome.

    will revert soon

    thanks again.
