Are City Channel in breach of any broadcasting regulations?

This morning, 27th Dec, City Channel broadcast, what is billed as a “Live and interactive show” called Party People. I won’t comment on the content of the show as I personally feel it has no place on the channel and was not what the program try to make the audience dial into them privately for a chat.

On numerous times, they stated you could dial their number (cost 2.40Eur a min) and get through to one of them within 60 seconds. Voice-over announcements remind you the show is live and interactive. However it’s recorded. The on-air chat began to revolve around the presenters birthdays, both of which were to be in three weeks time, in October, thus dating the show back in September.

I know City Channel is only a small time cable broadcaster, but they shouldn't be showing programs whos main aim is to make profit from premium phone calls, and doing so under false pretenses. It’s one big shame. If this was the BBC or ITV, the regulators would be on them like a tonne or bricks. Can the BCI do anything here as this is just wrong? I’ve already complained to the service providers of the program and phone line. No comment from them yet.

If the regulator can do nothing about it then they are a sham. City Channel should be fined heavily for broadcasting that ****e without putting a warning onscreen.

I'd say it would be more Regtel's remit more so than the BCI's as it involves premium rate numbers.

Regtel and BCI should be notified. I'm sure this type of programming wasn't envisaged in the licence agrement with the BCI. Its hardly relevant "local" programming. The fact that its not "live" makes it even more sick as I'm sure there are sad people out there ringing in to this. I feel even more sorry for the slappers on it. More wannabe celebrities prepared to do anything for that little bit of fame...........
