I started to get a bad feeling when I checked on 24th and saw no reviews of Aliens vs Predator 2 ... the studio is holding it back from reviewers, not good

My fears that the memory of the nonsense of AvP would be wiped clean by a shinny new full on action (and proper R-rated) version were quickly dashed when the poor reviewers actually had to sit through the movie with everyone else on Christmas day and give their piss poor recommendations.

Its probably the worst movie of the year, and the worst of the entire Aliens/Predator franchise

Come back Paul "WS" Anderson, all if forgiven

Some very bold statements there, really, looking on www.imdb.com, it seems that it's at least superior to the previous film, which really isn't very hard. But expecting the film to actually be good? You're setting yourself up on that one.

Haven't seen it yet but IGN have given it 7/10, and I liked the trailer so I will go see it.IGN Review

I'm still looking forward to it. In fact, I don't think I'll look forward to the birth of my first born child as much as I'm looking forward to this. If it sucks it'll be such a kick in the balls, because I think the R-rated trailer is excellent. At least there wasn't much raised hope before the first one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,066 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

Damn, knew it was too much to hope that this would be any way decent :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,988 ✭✭✭constitutionus

i dont have any respect for film critics so i'll reserve judgement till i actually see it.

seeing as its one of the only films coming out in january that i want to go see its puts it ahead of the pack already. the trailers definetly make it looks better than the last and seeing as i enjoyed that for what it was, and having such a low base to start from, i expect to enjoy this too.

after all im not looking for high art. just some kick arse sci fi action with mood.:D

I really enjoyed this. Yes it's silly in parts but it has lots of action and gore and plenty of nods to all the original movies. Infinitely better then the first AvP imo. Go and see it for yourself if your a fan there's plenty to enjoy.

Take aliens 4 and stick a pred in it and that would be a good movie.

Sorry guys but it's god awful there's even a teen romance stuck in there too and the Aliens look Shocking (if you can see them at all in the Dark that is) !

What I'm led to believe from one reviewer is that once there are no humans in any of the scenes its a very enjoyable movie. Its a damn shame that this franchise wasn't paid any respect like having good actors and directors. It would have made a world of difference.

Soon enough there will be more bad movies between the two series than good.

    Alien
    Aliens
    Alien 3
    Predator
    Alien 4
    Predator 2
    AvP
    AvP: Reqruiem

    Oh dear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,673 ✭✭✭✭senordingdong

    Predator 2 wasn' that bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,080 ✭✭✭✭Tusky

    Predator 2 wasn' that bad.

No, it wasnt...but its closer in quality to that bracket than the top one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,541 ✭✭✭Davei141

Predator 2 was great fun, nowhere near those other films..in my humble opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,589 ✭✭✭✭Necronomicon

And Alien Resurrection wasn't the worst movie in the world....

    /ducks

Actually what's the release date here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 454 ✭✭CrazyTalk

I liked Predator 2,....always watched it when I was a kid...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,066 ✭✭✭youcancallmeal

I though Predator 2 was better than Aliens 3

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,988 ✭✭✭constitutionus

danny glover was great in it and it expanded nicely on the mythos ( the display of skulls on the ship showing an alien for instance) and the guy who played the government agent was class (think his son was in starship troopers)

    pred 2 was class.

BTW i think AvP2 is out jan 18th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,300 ✭✭✭✭razorblunt

Saw this in the States over New Years and it is terrible, pretty much all the best bits are in the trailer and the Aliens are made to look very weak.

    The Predator is class though!

gary busey played the agent in pred 2 and was also in point break with keanu reeves and under siege with segal. i think it's his bro in starship troopers1 and he's jake busey

Pred 1 is on right now. Its such a class movie. I still get the chills from remembering seeing it as a kid. Theres a woodcock or something in the bushes in my garden and it makes the noises that you hear when the pred is around. Freaky! (yeah I know wood cock in the bush- no jokes please)

they should have brought the predators forward to the time of aliens rather then bring the aliens back to the naughties.
thats the underlying problem of the AVP franchise imo. they limited themselves in a sci-fi world

Hoew about a sequel to Alien Resurrection where Ripley comes into contact with predators, and then somehow has to work with an Alien Hive to defeat the predators.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 551 ✭✭✭meanmachine3

i think the reasons behind all of this are as follows.
when danny glover was in the predator ship in p.2 we all saw the alien trophy and questions we asked about this, thats why they did AVP. but it would've been better if they had stuck to the original book that was out years ago.
then after aliens came out (one of the best sci fi movies ever made.) questions were asked about the origins of the android bishop.

all in all if james cameron the master of sci fi movies had done the first AVP, personally i reckon things would've been a whole lot more different and we could've had one of the biggest blockbusters of that year.

the AVP movies open a big can of worms in the sense that the first AVP takes place long before ALIEN.

Assuming I'm understanding you correctly then how is it opening a can of worms?

We never found out where aliens come from in the movies. There was a barren planet and an alien spaceship in which the aliens had clearly been killed by the...errrr.... aliens.

Who is to say aliens and predators haven't been around for millenia?

In AVP when they read the archives the hunt has been going on for thousands of years on earth but if you read into things like alien there is no mention at all of either species, surely there must have been some record of some alien/ preadator activity on record as they did in preadaor 2 when gary busey is talking to danny glover he makes reference to the fight with arnie( though he doesn't mention arnie)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,300 ✭✭✭✭razorblunt

Went to see it in the States and the only good thing, I can say about it is that with the currency rates, tickets were cheaper than here!!! Well and nicer seats too!

It was terrible though, poor plot, terrible acting but the Predator was good. I wouldn't waste money in the cinema, I'd recommend a rental or wait for it to come on tv if you're not a truly die hard fan.

I haven't a clue what the ending is about though not really into the series!

Crap acting but it delivers what it promises; ie aliens, predators and an arse load of gorey violence.

I was very surprised at the opening scenes
where the kid got to watch his dad get attacked and inplanted with an alien then attacked himself. Then he gets to wake up just in time to see the alien burst out of dads chest before he clutches his own chest and starts screaming as an alien bursts out. Usually kids seem to be off limits for that sort of thing so it certainly set the tone early on

with out giving anything away bout the film, the ladys name is the same as the corporation that that sends ripley out in aliens. It has absolutely nothing to do with the movie over all and I fail to see how it could link in to a sequel.Just seemed to me to be a lazy way of throwing something in to show they did their research, but if they did they would have made a far better movie.

The movies with Ripley are set on the future.
AVP is set in the present.

How do you know that isn't the link.

of course thats the reference but it doesn't lead into a sequel the way the directors claimed it would as avp lead into avp:r cause they claimed before the movie came out thatthey intended on working on a sequel straight away, I hope they don't.Anyone who has read the comics will know that there is abit of intelligence put into the stories but this film hasa absolutely none, it makes a mockery of a franchise that already haas an abundance of great stories set in loads of different time lines that all fit nicely together and shows so much more. For example the predator home world in the movie is a joke, it is nothing like the comics, the great thing about the predators is that their home world is basically paradise, there is no violence and its an ideal civilization. This is why they hunt , to get rid of their violent urges.
Sorry to prattle on, just was so disappointed with this movie, its been so long since a good alien or predator movie has graced the screen. It irritates me because it should be an idiot proof franchise.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,563 ✭✭✭stateofflux

oh dear is right...after seeing the start of the trailer i was like "at least theres more violence" then i saw this predator / alien hybrid...gimme a f***ing break.....stupid idea...tarnishing a great series with every release.....was alien 5 with sigourney weaver canned because of this?

whoever said predator 2 is crap does'nt have a clue neither....

well the aliens take the traits of the host that they inpregnate, in alien 3 the alien had similar traits to its host, a dog, and there was predaliens in the excellent avp computer game if i remember correctly

    alien and aliens

    And Predator.

its a decent movie. better than AVP and alien resurrection (not too hard tho) plenty of gore and some good fights....typical brain dead movie tho. Aliens is still the best movie of all time. If youre a fan, youll enjoy it on a purely visceral level at least.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,107 ✭✭✭adonis

i also liked pr2- pr1 was great and is still the best action movie out there for my money

those avp ones look like a load of "£$"£ (uninformed opinion i havent lowered myself to watching any of them)

    calling bs on that

If your a fan of the predator series, this film is good enough, they do the predator some justice. He's badass, you see some neat new toys and it fills a bit more in about the mythos, also it has alot of the spirit of the earlier predator films, its corny, its violent and the predator looks pretty awesome.

But if your an Aliens fan...well its pretty damn dreadful. The Aliens are tragic, they behave like some b-movie man in a suit while stinking drunk, the costumes themselves are borderline *look ma! ZIPPER!* and the new *predalien* is a joke, to anyone who saw the the first AvP (also quite bad, but not as bad as this one) remember how the predator moved like a wrestler? Well it seems that actor got rehired to be the predalien in this film.

The only redeeming alien element introduced in the plot is so poorly manhandled that if anymore alien films are made I am pretty sure it will not be brought up (
the film reveals how a young queen can quickly raise a hive with neither egg nor facehugger.
    )

To make matters worse, the attempt to tie this film to the rest of the series is so f*cking horrible, they should have just left it as an oddity on its own.

All I can expect now is that the series is so f*cked that we will be seeing horrible remakes in the next decade.

I never stated anything as fact, so you cant 'call bs' on an opinion.

Its a decent film if youve got an hour and a half to spare and a passing interest in either alien or predator films.

im going to see it today and still have hope..

allthe negetive things ive heard are from

    a) critics - which has no foothold anymore

    b) comic book fans - films are always changed from comics...to appeal to a larger public...and for a reason i wont state in case i get banned for jeering.

    c) people expeting an intellegent movie - this is just gore and aliens......and tbh after the tripe of those grindhouse movies i watched....that were so critically aclaimed by everyone....alien resurection shoulda got an oscar : /

    so i still have hope

i think im one of the few who enjoyed avp..but just hated a friendly predator

    I liked Predator 2,Gary Busey was great,he had the best lines;
Busey : 'Guess who's back to kick your ass'
I like the idea of Predator picking off drug lords, maybe they could do a Predator 3 with the predator hunting down contestants in X Factor.:D
P2 wasn't as good as Alien 3 though,Alien 3 the director's cut was a huge improvement but it still breaks your heart; The first hour is near perfect then it slowly falls apart.Still much better than the original cut though.

Did anyone watch the first 5 minutes that was shown on FilmFour the other night? They did this with Dawn of the Dead as well, but I think more people would have gone to see DotD on the strength of the first 5 mins than will go to see AvP. The quality looks like late night TV Sci-Fi at best, and the pace at which the events unfold is just laughable. Did the Studio just say to the Directors
"Right, here's what I want. Within 4 mins, I want A Predator to be killed, the ship to crash, an acid burn, two people with facehuggers on them, and another Predator en route to Earth to save the planet."

Just posted a review so no point reiterating it but I thought it was a damn good movie - how anybody can imply its only marginally better then the first turd of a movie is beyond me. The credits in this movie are better then the entire first movie.

Also, I didn't like Predator 2 very much, but I wouldn't call it crap. Just disappointing. Alien 3 however, was rubbish. Plain rubbish. I did like Alien Resurrection though....not remotely as bad as people make it out to be.

It was the worst fil i've ever seen. C'mon I expected action on par with Alien and Terminator. But there wasn't an ounce of plot at all. I found myself laughing with my friends and with the rest of the audience during the film at some of the scenes and lines. People were leaving in droves before the end. Pure Sh*t

I really liked this film! But I am all for Predator - not keen on Alien so maybe my opinion is a little biased! I just enjoyed the whole film, was totally engrossed. Way way better than the first one. I gotta admit though - I kinda liked that one...

    Don't hurt me
