Does anyone like me think that Guinness moving from St.James' gate is a national shame akin to Bertie getting back into office?

wait now, moving WHAT????? if they are it's a disgrace, but then it's what we've come to expect from diageo

It is moving to the first place that the pints were brewed, Leixlip or somewhere.

Spiritual home is how it was described, I think.

I didn't know they were moving, I heard they were talking about it but decided not to. Shame anyway

what on earth is left in this city to attract tourists?

on a sort of related note, I miss Frawleys
the guy that owns it told me that it's all being sold to become a "cultural spot" with restaurants and hotels and stuff
    so bye bye Thomas street

First I've heard of it and there isn't much that gets past me in this town.

In fairness, they're taking the move pretty seriously. I completed an online survey, as I'm sure others did too, about whether my attitude towards Guinness would change if they moved.

Personally I don't care. It doesn't bother me where it's made. I'm sure it does bother some, but it's certainly not a 'national disgrace', and I wouldn't say 'shame on' Guinness.

Leixlip is a dump I hope they dont move out there

ps. where the hell did you people hear about this

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,799 ✭✭✭Tha Gopher

    eh, no?

Personally Im more annoyed they are not allowing homes to be built on the site when they do move. Its a fcuking brewery ffs, not the GPO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,861 ✭✭✭RobbieTheRobber

Cant we get some actual factual linkage here I heard there was a consideration a long time ago and heard nothing since also a lot of the buildings on the james gate site would be listed so its not like it can be knocked down

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

Who cares. I think it's embarrasing that tourists come to Dublin and the best thing we have to show them is a brewery.

They should build a nice new casino on the vacant land.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 21,254 Mod ✭✭✭✭Dub13

They have appointed consultants to look at the possibility of a move, with property prices so high in Dublin city they will likely find moving very attractive.

If they do decide to move they have identified two possible sites one in Leixlip and the other one out in Balbriggian, the balbriggian one is the front runner for various reasons such as a new port planed for the area.

Dublin City Council are trying to stop the move they are looking at a motion to rezone the land so no development can happen on it thus dramatically decreasing the value of the land.

Guinness will move to a state of the art facility in Balbriggan. St James Gate will be sold and the rats will be homeless. AFAIK the Hopstore will remain a tourist attraction.

There was something mentioned about this around August Sept in the news, but nothing was confirmed after.
Wait and see ... they may not even do anything

And they say Cork folk have an inflated sense of the importance of their county? Jesus. Fair play to Galwegians- despite it being by far the windiest rainyest most depressing miles from anywhere godforsaken kip* in Ireland I have never met a Galway person who doesnt love the homeland.

*: Galway city is quite nice in terms of appearance, and there are alot of good looking naturally tanned black haired women out there with a nearly Mediterranean type appearance, but if I had to put up with weather like that Id kill myself quite frankly. And dont get me started on the misery of small town Galway. I was quite honestly awe struck by the amount of immigrants in Galway, as I was baffled as to how any of them would deliberately move to what must be by far the wettest part of Ireland.

Oh, and what does shoop the woop mean? :D Galway girl I know has it on her bebo and all

What's this obsession with Guinness being Ireland's national drink? It only is because of suave marketing

It's all part of their plan to get Guinness huge in Africa.

Part A: Move it to a satellite town in Balbriggan.
    Part B: ?????
    Part C: Profit

as long as they dont put a few thousand people out of work i dont care where in ireland they move, besides dont they need the water from the liffey to make the stuff, something about it being the only water source suitable for guinness

They use to brew it in London until recently, treated the local water so it had (almost) the same chemical properties as the Liffey.

A seizable proportion of the Guinness produced in the world is manufactured in Nigeria. Guinness is just a brand nowadays, and a faltering one at that in countries like Ireland. Diageo have been thinking of ditching James' gate for a long time. Any sources to confirm this?

Are you jealous Galway women seem to like Dublin accents? :)

Seriously though, apart from maybe Athlone nearly every other place you wouldnt fancy living has its upsides, or is near somewhere decent. Dundalk for example. Bit of a kip, but its near Newry and the Down coast, and isnt all that far from Belfast, nice area around the coast there generally. Drogheda and Navan- not the nicest spots, but only an hour from the big smoke. But Galway is seemingly rain rain and more rain. Ive a gang of mates who head once a year without fail, and my foreign workmates seem to think Galway is some heavenly land, they head constantly. Which is odd seeing as they constantly complain about the Irish weather in general- if they regard Dublin as too cold, wet and windy I havent got a clue why they like Galway  Personally I dont think Id touch it with a bargepole again, it costs an arm and a leg to get to and yil get washed out. Alot more craic paying as much/slightly less to visit a city across the water like Liverpool. Im not saying Dublin is brilliant. Its not. Its overpriced, full of traffic and has quite possibly the worst club scene of any large European city, and when talking to foreigners abroad I always tell them Dublin is not worth wasting their money visiting. Personally Id be sick if I went to a European city on holiday and frequented a nightclub playing awful cheese which shuts at 2:30am. But Id still prefer it to the Galway weather.

IT's because in Galway you dont have to get a taxi everywhere unlike Dublin.

Ah you see you would have got away with that if you hadn't put "Balbriggan" and "state of the art" in the same sentence :p

    Rats p1ss?

On a more serious note (G# apparently) - like most other manufacturing its all being pushed out further and further - St James' Gate isn't any different BUT if they put something good in there its progress. If they put in 50 million undersized and overpriced apartments well they can feck off so.

    D.

90% of the land on the Docks isn't used by them - They'll still have the visitors centre there - It's just all the land that runs from the station along the quays they'll get rid of surely.

As we speak, plant design is at a very advanced stage. Balbriggan does probably sound surprising, but not when you consider that Dublin port will also be moving there. You can expect Balbriggan to be a much different place within 5 years.

Have a laugh, but I know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,373 ✭✭✭Dr Galen

is there a source for this yet or is this recycling of the rumours that have been doing the rounds for years now?

And where, pray tell, is this proposed plant going to be in Balbriggan?

I heard they are going to use the site of the old intel ESSM plant. It's close to the Rye river, which is a tributary of the Liffey.
