Power City had an ad in a paper saying they'd beat any price from Harvey's, DID or Curry's. Can't remember if it was just TV's or all electronics, but look out for similar ads.

I wouldnt rely on those websites, quite often when i worked in DID we would get phonecalls over the weekend to change the prices on things long before the website was updated...

Generally I've found PowerCity pretty much cheaper than the other guys.

As for price matchers I always give the business to the guys that advertise the lowest prices. Why give the sale to the guys who are trying to profit more? Fine if they're far apart and it's handier to ask for a price match but not fine if they're near enough to each other.

My mother in law had to take power city to the small claims court to get a refund she was entitled to. She was one of many, according to the clerk.

Me too, and I've always found Harvey Norman to be one of the most expensive.

I picked up a 26in LCD tv (online price €425) in Power City for the folks last Saturday. They had "SALE" signs plastered all over the shop when I got there so I thought "great, might save some money" but when I asked a sales clerk what the reduction was on the instore price of €450, he said it was €25. I told him that was then the same price I would have paid had I just bought the tv through their website and so it wasn't really a sale price. The git then told me out straight that I was mistaken so I replied that I had checked the price 20 minutes before I arrived at the shop and that we could use his pc to confirm this. He then said he was too busy and if I didn't want the tv at that price, there were other customers waiting. I would have loved to tell him where to stick the tv but as usual, I left my shopping too late and so to avoid a panic buy elsewhere, I bought the tv. They might be cheap but I hate buying things in Power City. Much better service in DID but they're usually a bit more expensive.

Went to Harvey Norman in Tralee there - a bit of a joke of a sale really.

A big sign saying 20 euro off a 1,000 euro tv doesn't exactly get the blood running!

sale was decent in power city today. basically was 10% off everything. managed to pick up a 42" Phillips HD plasma for €900 (normally €999 so not too shabby)

Harvey Normans can charge more because a lot of their sales are on finance which they arrange in store.

I've had bad experiences with Power city and their after sales service so I normally get a written quote in power city and harvey normans will always match it !

i'm currently having a bad experience with power city at the moment with them insisting the above plasma TV has already been picked up from their store when my new TV stand at home is sitting TVless :(

Manager wasn't in tonight, but first thing in the morning I'm down there and will be reading the riot act / calling the gardai if I don't leave the store with the TV

I thought you already had it at home & was going to ask you about it (picture quality etc.). But I guess I'll have to wait now :(

it was out of stock when I paid for it but was told they would have more today by 3pm.

alas when I went in at 3pm they went to the stores for about 15 mins and said it still hadn't come in but should be in at 8pm. course when I went in a 8pm today I was told it was already collected :rolleyes::rolleyes::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

going by the display model the picture qaulity is very good as I compared quite a few 42" plasmas and LCDs when in there and the qaulity was miles better than some of the 42" equivalents which were €200-400 more expensive

I'm currently looking at two Philips 42" TVs on their website. One of them is LCD and the other one is Plasma.

So could anyone suggest which one would be better for SD signal as I'm not going to use it for any HD stuff in the near future. ??

    Thanks a lot in advance.

If you want a bargain, Haggle!! I went into Currys last year after the sales.. Picked up a 40" Samsung LCD for €1100, was priced in the store at €1499... It took me about 30mins of annoying the sales clerk and eventually getting the managers attention, took out a wad of cash and told him I'd take it right now for €1100. Worked a treat....

well I got my 42" plasma today and as expected the SDTV qaulity is excellent. in HD it's even better :)

also , surround sound on it will deafen you even when the volume is only half way up :D:D:D:D

plasma tvs are way superior than lcd for sd tv ,ntl, skytv, chorus ,lcd tvs suffer from blurring, unnaturral colors, washedout blacks, motion blur.
thet are ok for console games and pcgames, lcd tvs just have unrealistic colors ,the pixels cant keep up with fast motion, get a 42inch tv and you,ll get a great SDTV ,NTL,PICTURE.

Thats old hat, mate. 42" Plasma beside 42" LCD last year, both Philips in Currys, both on HD source and SD source and no appreciable difference. Plasma did look slightly better up close (5-6 feet), but put it up against 1/3 the lifespan of LCD and your problem starts there.

i have to disagree with your there. I was looking at many different LCDs in Powercity and in general they all looked fairly blotchy and pixelated than the plasmas.

hell even some of the plasmas were showing bad pixelation and blotches.

Sounds more like a bad signal to them, then. SD on a lot of LCD/Plasma will show up pretty badly if the signal is weak. I Play Blu-Ray through a PS3 onto a year old Philips LCD 37" and it looks awesome.

a major problem with picking tvs in store is that how they look there and then bears little relation to how it will look in your home.

the tvs in store are usually set to optimal brightness to compete with the instore lighting, which absolutely exagerates any blemish a screen might have. couple that with the fact that all these tvs tend to be running off a shared signal and you're asking for trouble.

if possible you need to try and see any tv you are interested in in a private av room with more natural lighting to get an impression of how the screen actually looks.

annoyingly, most tv makers how set their default tv settings to this 'shop' mode, so they look awful when you get home, and take a lot of adjusting to optimise the picture.

I picked up this bad boy LCD http://www.powercity.ie/?par=10-14-46M87

SD is better quality then on old CRT (which was on its way out. Ive just seen that new BOI ad with the dragon & the night & the picture is so crisp & sharp its unbeleivable.
I also watched transformers using Ps3 & normal scart connection & again pcture is so crisp & sharp. I have HDMI cable that I havent yet hooked up which will make it even better again.

    Id defo recomend this tv
