I have a phillips 32" wide tv about 4 years old. It has now started to switch it self to standby every 5 mins or so. any ideas or bin??

Had a similar problem. It turned out the remote was dodgy and kept emitting commands (standby) the whole time. It might be worth ruling this out.

is it lcd, CRT(not flat, big and bulky) or plasma??
lcd and plasma have much shorter lives than good old CRT tube tv's, especially if used for gaming

It could be one of many things. Probably a dry solder joint or when a component heats up it fails and causes the TV to go into standby.
Its worth getting someone to look at it i would think.

Also as suggested above, leave the remote out of the room and see what happens. Ive seen it happen on one or 2 rare occasions where there is a button slightly stuck on the remote causing it, but id say its a fault on the TV itself.

Thanks will try the remote thing as it's a spurious one. It's a big old crt.
    Cheers:):)

also remove the remotes for any other systems.
i have a "problem" with my new lcd in that it turns on at random.

turns out that the on button on another remote has the same function as the on button on the tv
