The wifi is just as fast as the wireless network you are connecting to. For example i have Eircom broadband and it goes at exactly the same speed as it would on the computer

lucky you, for me it was slower than my connection, but that was down to the safari browser having to resize the pages to fit the screen... hope you enjoy the touch and can't wait to here your true impressions post glamour factor.

I got this nike bag off the net and i can connect an ipod to it. #i was thinkin of gettin a nano or a touch, is the touch really worth the extra 100 bucks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,888 ✭✭✭nanook

have to say, I got mine today in the santa bag, my wife thought i needed one for some reason. Have to say I love it but am having problems accessing the internet but will keep trying

You need a wireless network in the house or wherever you are for it to work. It will ask you for a password. This is just the encryption key (it's long so you might enter it wrong on the first go). Once you have joined the ipod will automatically join that network without asking for the password again. However if you go into a new network (say at work or in the airport) you will need to enter that password

I think the iPod is worth that extra bit of money. If you are just going to listen to songs, then maybe one of the older iPods will do. But if you will make use of the video function (better than the ipod video as it has widescreen etc) and the internet (presuming you have a wireless network available to you) then the iPod Touch is definitely worth it

You need to install iTunes on your computer and add your music to it's library. Once connected to the computer the iPod will be detected and itunes will start up and talk you through everything.

My ipod touch dont seems to detect itunes for some reason!! Have the latest itunes and all. When I put the ipod touch in, I just get a cable symbol and itunes symbol on the touch. Think I may have a faulty one. Any help?

as posted in another thread.... I bought one for my wifey for christmas.. I'v been playing around with it for the last week or two ... jailbreaking and installing apps and converting video etc etc...
As an apple hater I have to give this one some praise.... it's a neat piece of kit.... and tbh if I didn't have to convert video I'd get one for myself......

and what is jailbreaking, what great things can you do with the I-touch.

It really is a fantastic piece of kit.

Here is a good tip for converting videos. Go to google and search for "youtube downloader". It really is a great program. I know it sounds like you can just do youtube videos, but there is an option to convert files already on your computer (eg from AVI to MOV). There may be better solutions, but that's the one I use. Once you have it converted into MOV format, add it to your itunes library and it will transfer no problem

    Hope this helps,
Tim (still typing from the ipod touch!)

Glad you're all enjoying them :)
I've mine about 2 weeks now.
For converting videos get videora (its free), it coverts your video to the right format and adds them automatically to your itunes library. It can also rip and convert video from youtube.

As for jailbreaking, its definitely worth doing, you get mail app, google maps, weather, stocks, basically the iPhone apps and plenty of cool 3rd party apps (I use the PDF viewer and book reader a lot).
There are plenty of guides available on the net, and its safe to do, still haven't heard any "bricking" stories.

If you're thinking of getting one, do you defo won't regret it :)

My Son got one from Santa(Uncle)...Some parts of the screen just don't respond to touch...Is there anywhere in Dublin I can bring it back to replace or repair...It was bought in San Fran btw.....

Easier way to do it is open your installer app then open sources press the edit button then add and put in repo.us.to
This is the place for the iPhone apps.
You need to install the preps first (they're there too) then the apps. Its simple.

As for the messenger there is an app for it but its pretty hit and miss at the mo. I use meebo to. The site is iPhone/touch compatible too :) i.e. it fits the screen perfectly.

When I got mine in ny the guy in apple said I would be covered for faults here too. I'd say best bet is ring apple here or try the Irish apple site/store.

It is a good machine but would be even better if it had an 80GB HDD. It would be perfect for people used to using an iPod Nano but anyone used to using an 5/5.5/6G iPod will find it hard to use a smaller memory device. On my 80GB iPod it was a joy to dump videos and songs onto it but now I am a bit more cautious on how big a file is and what I put onto it.

make sure you're using the correct wireless encryption code. you can find them by logging into your routers homepage usually 192.168.0.254 or 192.168.1.254 for eircom broadband

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 454 ✭✭DonFred

I have NTL broadband would this matter?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

there should still be a way to log into your wireless router.

do you have the name and model of your router per chance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 454 ✭✭DonFred

Yeah its Zyxel wireless cable router, laptop is working fine just cant input my password into the ipod touch. Driving me mental...

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 7,396 Mod ✭✭✭✭**Timbuk2**

Is there no encryption key or anything like it to be found? With Eircom BB, the encryption key is a 26 digit password consisting mainly of numbers with with some letters to

Is there any code like this? It may be written somewhere on the router itself (on a stuck on label or something). Maybe it's in the documentation or on the router page in your internet browser

From reading this thread I've figured that when the 8GB Beast arrives on Monday, I'm going to need to do some "tinkering" straight away to get the best out of it.

Can anyone give me what they consider to be the best applications that they've come across so I can learn from your own experience and be up and running asap?

I presume that Jailbreaking it is number one on the list..

Absolutely class piece of kit, just finished jailbreaking it and everything is even better. One question though, I have the PDF viewer installed but I'm just trying to figure out enabling ssh. I've installed it fine but I can't get my files onto it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

is ssh the only method to get files on to a jailbreaked iphone/touch?

you may want to give winscp a try, it provides a GUI for the ssh protocol.

I was having a gander at that, is it to be installed on the host machine or the itouch? Because I can only find a exe for it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

no need to install it, just download it to your desktop and run the exe.

from there you enter in the ipod touch's ip address make sure the radio button that says SSH is selected and then enter in user name and password, which i think - if reading up on jailbreaking has thought me anything - is root and password is alpine.

just wondering how much is and 8gb itouch in dublin?
am in malaysia and have seen one for about €360 but im sure i could find it cheaper would it be worth buying it here or not?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,888 ✭✭✭nanook

    depends if something goes wrong.

Have to say I would advise anyone one, if they get the opportunity to buy one of these you really should, they are fantastic and that is before you add extra applications

Saw the 8gb iTouch on Play.Com for €280.

I'm trying to connect my ipod touch to eircom. I've entered the encryption key but keep getting the following message when I try to go on line 'Safari cannot open the page because it cannot find the server' What I'm I doing wrong ?? Any help would be much appreciated!!

Santa brought one for my son. Very slick! It's cool for looking at digital photos too.
So far the only downside is I'm not terribly impressed with the battery life. Also its dopey that it blanks out the wi-fi password as you type it in. Very user-friendly:rolleyes:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

play.com will no ship electronics outside of the UK due to W.E.E.E charges.

yeah will probably buy one anyway was just wondering if its much cheaper or if it is at all cheaper here than in ireland.
again if something did go wrong it would be a bit of a kick in the a** because there would be nowhere to return it unless the warrenty's are international ones?

The battery life is supposed to be pretty reasonable for that sort of device. Turning the screen brightness down may give you a little more time. My wife has a creative zen vision:m. That gets about 12 hours for music, and maybe 3-4 for video. I'd say the iTouch will match that.

Also, it's common convention to blank or asterisk out a password on a mobile device.

Sounds pretty dear. I'll be selling a brand new 16gb one for less than that shortly.

Thanks for that. FWIW I have seen newer devices where the password is not blanked out. IMHO it makes some sense to blank a password on a desktop where some evil-doer might be looking over your shoulder but not on a palm sized device. ;)
