    Hi folks,

Just received a PS3 from my fiánce for Christmas. I'm stunned! :) I have an Xbox 360 also.

I just want to know what I can do with it really. Obviously I can play games - I got uncharted with it, bluray etc. but what's online like? Can I download demo's etc ala Xbox live. Any tips for a newbie to the PS3? What features does it have that the 360 doesn't?

    Thanks in advance,
    Loon

Yeah, you can create a PSN ID to sign up for free then open the Playstation store from the menu when you boot up the PS3. There's a couple of demo's to download for free and some back catalog PS1 games for download.

edit: Be sure to update your firmware too. It will allow you to play divx/xvid videos too.

That was quick! Thanks. I assume updating firmware is fairly straightforward?

Yeah, assuming you have setup either a wired or wireless connection for the PS3 to your router.

I think the firmware update check is available in 2nd icon in the menu. Just to let you know it can be 15-20 minutes or so to download/install the firmware. The PSN Store is available from the blue icon that stands out. I think it's 2nd from the end.

I have wireless setup so I'll have to sort that out. Thanks for the quick responses. I'm gonna get stuck in now...

I find its handier to throw movies onto a USB stick and just plug it straight into the PS3, rather than trying to stream across the network.

the problem with video is twofold: filesize & format.

some of the media center software packs will convert the files over to a good format for you, but even then you need a damn fine piece of equipment to make it convert and send data seemlessly

What do I need to start streaming media? Is there a particular package?

You should be able to share files with Windows Media Player 11.
If you have Nero installed there's a seperate sharing app with that called Nero Media Home.
There's also a free program called TVersity that you can use to share your media. The PS3 should automatically pick up the media sharing from your PC and lets you play it.

I wouldn't know them all. Some are Wipeout, Crash Bandicoot, Populous, Everybody's Golf. There's about 15 or 20 I'd say
