I can't dance. I get up there and I don't have a clue what I'm doing. How do other people learn how to move? I just don't know where to start. I'd like to dance, but I just don't know what to do and look stupid. Any advice on how I can learn?

    Thanks!

Dancing in a nightclub, or a waltz? If the latter, they do classes. Check your local newspaper. Dancing in a nightclub, just get drunk, and do what the rest do (move your feet, and pretend you're either shaking two rattles, or doing kung-fu with your arms).

I'm in the same boat, I go out with friends and would enjoy dancing and having a laugh if not for the fact that I look like a complete and utter tool whenever I try :( I'm not the type that can pull off looking like a tool if I'm having fun either like some people hahaha

I just dont have enough rhythm I think, would be very interesting to any advice anyone can give the OP as I'm in the same boat

Someone suggested practising in the bedroom once but that just sounds sad hahaha

If you're talking about a club, rest assured, 95% of the guys in there can't dance, just do the whole side to side lark.

if it's a club, don't worry about it, everyone else is the same.

i find the big fish, small fish, cardboard box is a classic move as not only does it take the piss out of everyone there, it also is fun to do :D

I was talking about club dancing. I know you probably can't just wing it when it comes to waltzes and ballroom dance.

Yeah, but I'm REALLY bad (and yes, I've been told so it's not just in my head :D).

Cardboard box, stacking the shelves and the good old dice (a la knocked up).
I can do a bit of old style 'jivving' but thats saved for weddings when dancing with the relatives! :D

I read someone asking this question before and also the answer that helped me,

pick three other blokes dancing and copy what they do,really, this worked so well.

If someone stats pulling off some 'advanced move' then start copying a bit from another person, heh, really , you'll start to build a library of ok dance moves.

this works so well when it's music you're not used to,and it's gas trying to figure out who your mate is copying :)

Also, in my own experience, try to pick out say the snare drum beat, and have it so that whatever limb your moving stops when you hear the snare drum, now instantly know which limb your going to move next and repeat.Try it with just your legs first at home, then shoulders only ,hips and then head only (your hands can of course stay holding your pint cause you're still nervous and of course you brought it onto the floor,a big no no)

so now you're building Rythm, and of course your bedroom mirror has never seen such action , go get em tiger!

p.s. it's really about being happy and wanting to have a dance, there may be deeper issues......how was your childhood ?

LMAO! Nah, I don't think there are any deeper issues here. I'll take you other advice though, as it sounds helpful. I'll definitely give it a go.

Thanks for all the feedback! This is actually very helpful!

I can't dance to save my life. Doesn't stop me though - why should I miss out and sit in the corner because I can't do something as well as others?

    Remember:

Only dance to music that you like and don't try too hard?

Right well speaking from personal experience most people especially men such as myself dont have a clue how to dance! however a few years ago now i reached a stage where i could not give a fcuk what anyone taught of me so i just went mad and had fun on the dance floor making things up as i went along since then i've been told by many a lass that i'm quite the dancer and recently been told by a friend that im the best straight male dancer that she's ever seen...i think thats a good thing!!!

so basically forget about everyone else and just enjoy yourself thats what its all about!

my favourite people (largely guys) to dance with are the ones who can't dance to save their lives, but who dont give a ****. the ones who get up there, and just flail or generally look like complete dorks, but they know they can't dance, and tehy dnot care.

I hate dancing, Im far too neurotic and it just feels so unnatural, I would rather chat anyday, sadly this makes it a bit ****e to ever meet people in clubs (except the smoking bit, before I lose them to the dancefloor), the only cure i ever found to this was to take substances but thats not really the answer so sadly I think there just is no cure.

I used to be really self-conscious about dancing too. I found that once I'd had a certain number of drinks I'd loosen up and not care so much what people thought of me. I think if you don't care so much you actually look better. I'm not a great dancer now or anything but it's all about confidence. Just let yourself go. Try different things don't worry about how you look.

Well i'm in the same boat as you i'm afraid as i'm usually the one who would rather sit with the coats on the chair than make a complete arse of myself.

But in future i'm gonna take some advice that has been repeatedly said on this board...dance like you don't care, dance like no-one is watching and it'll come naturally. Maybe this should be the best course of action for all the others on this boards who cant dance either :) Maybe some lessons in hip-hop dancing would be best for clubbing, as i've seen classmates of mine do some and they look v good doing it.

I asked the same question before xmas, but just got people posting stupid youtube vlips of people dancing etc.

One tip I did learn is to not plant your feet, try to keep them moving a little.

I'm very surprized that there is not a dancing forum on boards, there are tons of guys like us
    who need help!!!
