Kristin Kreuk is ridiculously hot, and also penned to play Chun Li in the soon to begin filming Street Fighter film. The special effects are truly spectacular in places, but unfortunately the show is too much Dawsons Creek and not enough Lois and Clark: The new adventures of superman, at least for my sophisticated pallette :p

well yes it's totally different from lois and clark the new adventures of superman because it's about clarks younger years something that really hasn't been written about before, have to say that tom welling is a more convincing actor than dean cain is,wasn't too much of a fan of that particular show but it was ok.

I watch smallville, mainly because I have been following it,but it is more Dawsons Creek than anything that you would call good. The dialogue is terrible, the acting apart from Lional,Lex and Chloe is terrible. Sorry but IMO,Tom Welling can't act to save his life.

Now and then it will pull a good episode out of somewhere but overall I wouldn't rate it. It gets double what Supernatural gets in terms of viewers (Supernatural is on after it in the US),yet Supernatural is a very good show, well written and acted.

You kinda missed my point, I think. I'm quite familiar with the show, I lived with a guy who had the first 4 season boxsets back when there were only 5 seasons out... He would make me regularly sit through episodes and there was just too much will they/wont they, oh they did, but it didnt matter because there was some reset switch flicked that resets the status quo followed by some retarded soul-searching or talks about their feelings. All intermixed with really quality action scenes which was a shame. I could have really liked the show if it wasnt so stuck up its own arse.

I'm sorry to criticise a show that you so clearly enjoy and I understand that it was probably not the feedback you expected but I am afraid there are just too many really good shows out there that are axed before their time while shows like Smallville just keep going to the point where my tolerance for bad script-writing/acting makes me just want to go to America and start bludgeoning people to death with their own arms...

The premise could have been great aside from the fact that they pissed all over the established canon material. I could have forgiven that as it took it all in a new direction that I quite liked. The initial friendship between Lex and Clark was really interesting especially the duplicity on both sides causing tension between the two of them.

Lana was a great character to introduce as she allowed for the unorthodox situation of a potential relationship long before Lois was ever introduced thus avoiding alot of complications. The idea to have her second name as Lane and then introduce her cousin just kinda defeated the purpose of that whole idea though. Combined with that the very fact that it is constantly used as a source of drama by having Clark so clearly drawn to her, and her to him, only to create issues because he doesnt want to have her hurt is infuriating. It had the great potential to examine alot of issues that we dont see in other Superman shows.

Then there is the evolution of his powers, something that was handled quite well, but A) Always took a back-seat to the "feelings" going on in each episode and B) was usually used in a very pre-defined way in the episode it was introduced in order to allow Clark to save the day.

Then there was the whole witch story arc whatever the fook that was about...
The token black guy who just seemed to have been written out of the show for no apparent reason. The veronica mars clone, some eccentric mid-twenties millionaire who hangs around with a bunch of teenagers... and lots of deliberate set-ups to exploit the fact that the cast is a bunch of (ex-)supermodels.

Way more than I had intended on writing and I highly doubt that you even managed to read to this point before angrily clicking on reply but I feel its important to vent these things when the oppurtunity arises and you my friend, gave me the oppurtunity :p

Nothing like a 4am post to vent, eh Ivan? :)

I like smallville and I'm still watching it. Acting is pretty dodgy all round, but I like watching to see where they go with it. They really do pull out all the stops for the season finales too, which are usually the best smallville episodes...

I've said it in a previous smallville thread, but I'll say it again - if I got a Euro for every time a character (mainly Lex, but there others) lost his/her memory, I'd have enough for a very good night out....

Just a correction, her surname is Lang and Lois is Chloe's cousin.

I do agree that the on/off, teenage angst tends to be the core of the show. Lana's constant moaning and doe-eyed innocence after several seasons really got to me. Season 7 gets over some of these things. Potential
Thankfully Lana loses her doe-eyed mopiness in season 7.

Lex and Lois are the only decent ones, probably because they're that bit older. Saying that I've seen all of the episodes and still enjoy the show (Supernatural is far better though).

no no ivan i totally respect your opinion of the show lol there's no way i'd be pissed off with someone elses opinion that's what i posted the thread for to read others opinions, quite enjoyed your post though as sarn pointed out lanas surname is lang and lois is chloes cousin not a major issue though, one other thing i've rather enjoyed in smallville over the 6 seasons so far is the music in it i know that's not a fundemental requirement for a tv show but to me it ticks a few more boxes.

I've been watching it since the start and I agree that there's far too much teenage angst in the show (despite the fact that the actors clearly left their teens in the '70s).

My problem is that I actually dislike a lot of the characters - Lana Lang is very unsympathetic generally and it grates me no end to hear characters constantly rabbit on about how great she is despite seeing nothing to deserve those actions. She has, admittedly, been better written lately but there's no grounds I can see for the adulation (I'm immune to her womanly charms I guess).
Lois Lane is just an obnoxious cow, something reinforced episode after episode when she ignores the welfare and feelings of others in order to get one of her "sassy" bitchy comments in.
Clark himself can be boorish and dislikeable but I do think Tom Welling can act, given the right material - there's definitely some talent there that can shine through (it was evident in the latest US episode for example). I also think he's got great on screen chemistry with Chloe Sullivan, who is by a long league my favourite character.
Lex's transition to the dark side was never really handled all that well, a shame as it had much potential.

As it currently stands, I'm waiting for the show to stop airing. I'm going to keep watching but I do often wish they had finished up years ago, especially when other shows got the axe. It's not a quality show but there's generally some sort of crude enjoyment to get out of it and, on occasion, a real gem. It's just we have to sit through a bit too much mawkish melodrama and cretinous characters to get there.

I completely agree, I do try to stick my nose in every so often and pick up an episode because some of the action scenes are the best we've ever seen from a superman show and it really would be a shame to miss it. But my tolerance to teenage angst only goes so far and then I feel dirty for having sat through it all.

I do love the way the sum-up of their feelings is usually left to the last few minutes of the episode, this is generally after the last ad-break on E4 so I can usually safely skip the last part and go find something interesting to watch :p

Smallville, was good, then great, then teenage blubber for a few seasons, s.6 recovered to good, but it needs to end quickly, put it out of its misery

Yeah you're right there, some episodes have been hit & miss, not enough baddies, too much teenage angst :(
As you could watch one ep & prob still follow it up later on in the series, but the 6th series has been good of late on E4 where i've watched most of the ep's.

But if anyone wants a catch-up the its starting a new 6th series on CH4@ 1.35PM

I came across the end of Supernatural's new series last nite on TV3 it appears its the latest 3rd series, but it was on late, is it much better?

The writing is usually dreadful, very bad acting as well, but you can't deny its ability to make a cracking season finale/season opener

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,490 ✭✭✭✭citytillidie

I think season 7 has picked up first 3 seasons were good then they ran out of baddies. Season 4 & 5 was too much like your normal teen drama. Season 6 was good and season 7 as I said has been really good and I like the way it ended before that stupid writers strike.

Supernatural is very good, much better than smallville. Good acting, good writing, none of these teenage angst scenes, which I think we might as well just label Clark and Lana in the barn at the end of every damn episode!
