Sporting Fingal FC

Sporting Fingal FC will begin life in a new "A championship", a third tier of the league, starting next year. Supposedly they will play at Morton stadium to begin with before building their own stadium out on Turvey Avenue.

Presumably the idea for the team, outside of giving local players a chance at a higher level, will be to catch fans from across Fingal and possibly beyond. A great opportunity for anyone not supporting Irish football and looking for a team.

Will anybody be tempted to watch them play?

    Where on Turvey Avenue?

    http://www.fingalcoco.ie/Planning/PlanningItemsOnDisplay/FingalFootballAcademy-ends191207/

Should find a pdf there. The "stadium" is to be part of a proposed football academy.

Seeing that my beloved Dublin city fc went tits up and i couldnt follow any other team that ive watched dublin city play against, Sporting fingal fc is my lifeline to eircom league football seeing that i live in fingal. Europe here we come :D. Anybody know anything about the players thats signed or planned friendlies? I know steve williams has signed but dont know about the rest.

    Steve Williams (Bray Wanderers)
    Paul Caffrey (Bray Wanderers)
    Chris Deans (Bray Wanderers)
    Philly Byrne (Kildare County)
    Stephen Caffrey (Free)
    Christy Doran (Free)
    Conan Byrne (UCD)
    Colm James (Longford Town)

That's a few of them. Must be more out there. Don't need to be in a race against time to get a squad together. Hopefully we can avoid becoming another Dublin City. Plenty of money washing about though so this project can make a better go of it. There was a friendly planned against Dundalk on 28th February but that might go now that we've been promoted to First Division status. Outside of friendlies the first game of the season will be away to Longford on Saturday night on the 8th of March.

Question is how can we get the people of Fingal into this?

    I might check them out.

Yep Morton Stadium. There's two home games in a row on the 14th and the 21st of March against Athlone and Limerick 37. Friday games.

A bit of advertisment localy would help, library's etc. Many foreign nationals use them daily so they might be tempted to some of the games. I havent seen any promotion for SFFC and if i wasnt for the fact that i am interested in the league then i wouldnt have know much about them. Success usually puts bums on seats though. Maybe you should get a match day discount with every 3 bin tags bought :D

No they havn't. They need to get their act together. When you look for sportingfingal.ie and similar addresses it redirects to the County Council so i'd imagine it will eventually be one of them.

Nope, but they need one come the 7th March or the FAI can fine them.

I give them 3 seasons, and then we say goodbye to them, like Dublin City.

Been getting my songs together already:D

"Are you Dublin City in disguise, etc..."

"Fingal City Franchise, you're just a Fingal City Franchise" :D Incase you don't get it someone around the idea of the club said Fingal is a city:rolleyes:.

When Limerick 37 come to play you start singing "Stab City Franchise", they're fans don't take it too easy, well at least not down in Limerick:cool:

How long did Dublin City last? Who were they before? Home Farm or something? Sporting Fingal aren't DubCity or any of the others, but a completely new club.

they should be free of the shackles, and lets be honest, failures, of the other clubs that went to the wall.

5 years. Firstly they were Home Farm FC then Home Farm Everton and finally Home Farm Fingal, before going to Dublin City FC.

Well try telling that to Limerick 37, started a clean sheet away from Limerick FC at the start of last season and manged to rack enough financial boll**k to have them on the verge of existence, and if it wasn't for a businessman that would have been reality.

I don't know about any pre season friendlies but here is the fixture list for the coming season. I'd definitely be interested in something like that. I'm only up the road.

Yep Bray on the 24th at 2 o'clock. Didn't hear about Drogheda. There was supposed to be one against Dundalk until we got the impromptu bump up to the First Division but that might be gone now.

There's an Irish football forum with a section for Sporting Fingal at www.foot.ie Note however that you can't become a member using a freemail email address.

In the meantime I'll be mentioning the team every chance i get to people in and around Swords. There is a team launch on Monday night in Corduff. Hopefully this will include a website launch with it so we can get proper information on the team.

Very decent squad. Pity you won't win the league as Shels have it in the bag:D:D

Running away buses to some grounds can be dodgy - Athlone, Cobh and Dundalk. I've got first-hand experience from all three and they seem to be the only one's (I visited every ground last season).

Best of luck with the supporters' club, but hope the club falls to ruins.

    Sporting Feck All.:D

Steve Williams - Good keeper, can be dodgy. (nearly cost us the league in 2006)

Aidan Collins - Decent defender, solid.

Joe O’Neill - Quality young player, played with our under 21's last season.

Jim Crawford - Solid midfielder, will add needed experience to your team, but very injury prone.

Conan Byrne - Another quality player, played with UCD last season.

Robbie Doyle - Hopeless. Bad attitude. Let got by Bray and Dundalk. Don't count on him to score many goals.

According to http://www.ucdsoccer.com/news.php?id=4055 it's being played at "Amateur League complex" in UCD methinks.

EEEmmm, with your quote "I take its not Corduff in Blanchardstown", I can only imagine what you said to get kicked out of foot.ie

You should have said "surely its Corduff in Blanchardstown as thats part of Fingal and would make sense"

Perhaps I read the context wrongly though?

You are correct, however that Corduff is near lusk and is effectivly rural and well out of the way.

On the other hand, the one in D15 is surrounded by 12 junior soccer clubs and a massive population.

    It's the obvious choice;)

    SF 1-1 UCD

UCD had plenty possession but did little with it. SF took one of their few chances.

I missed the goal :D. I came back for the second half and thought it was still 0-0. It wasnt a good game and a draw was a fair result. I dont know much about ucd but if that was their first team then i reckon they will struggle this season.

They lost three of their strongest players over the close-season in my opinion, Darren Quigley, Shane McFaul and Conor Sammon. Although they still have one of the best managers in the league with Pete Mahon.

You'd be very happy to know Shels are played some good football in our two friendlys over the weekend both in Donegal (Finn Harps and Letterkenny Rvs). Are defence is like a brick wall.:D

Shels look strong alright. Is it 2 up and 4 down this season? I think sporting will be in the top 5.

1 up, 3 down with no play off this season. Promotion will be extremely tough for any new side, i'd expect Shels & Waterford to challenge with maybe Dundalk (though they tend to bottle it year in, year out:D) having a go too.

Oh and for the record, i thing the whole SF thing is a joke, the last thing the EL needed was another Dublin based side and i honestly reckon the crowds will most definitely not come & stay, look at Dublin City for example). Once the initial 5 years of cash expires i'd expect them to go whallop, if it even lasts that long that is.

It's Bray away next Sunday. Should be a tougher task. I'll go with 2-0 to Bray. We shall see.

Mini plug for my bebo site. Unlikely another one is on there so i guess it's not a problem. Kinda struggling to attract well....... anybody!

    www.bebo.com/sportingfingalfc

Be a part of that until a better one comes along. Probably the next one. :D

I've heard of an event at the community centre in Rivervalley in Swords on Thursday 28th Feb. Conan Byrne will be there i think. They are recruiting for an official supporters club. When i hear more I'll let you know.

The "you" being anyone who reads this and is interested in supporting the team. ;)

Im from Swords too & I reckon its gonna be a big success. There are loadsa football fans out in these parts and its about time we had a team of our own.

Sure loads of other clubs are gonna hate us, but so what. Its gonna be great and totally different to the Dublin City fiasco. Its a new club with new players and a decent stadium, with a huge population to attract and plenty of investment.

Definitely something to get excited about - hopefully it all works out and we get the crowds.

I was readin the Fingal Independent the last few weeks and they've had loadsa coverage on Sporting Fingal so far. They started a Meet the Players thing and have had match reports and interviews with the gaffer Liam Buckley. The websites a bit behind but the papers worth having a look at

    http://www.fingal-independent.ie/sport/other-sports/sporting-fingal-set-for-historic-debut-1289794.html

Anyone plannin on heading off to Bray???

Im going. I will try and get to as many games as possible home and away.
