    Ok, here's the Q:

How many Rugby internationals have won national T&F titles?

I am only talking outdoor titles and in the date range 1963+

By my count I have 3 (possibly 4).

For bonus points name the events.

    OK I'm guessing

    Vinnie Becker sprinter
    Michael Kiernan sprinter
    Brendan Mullin sprinter
    Victor Costello Hammer thrower

Correct name and event: Becker (100m) and Kiernan (200m)

Costello is right man but wrong event. (Shot Putt)

Mullin held the 110m Hurdles record but never won a national title (I was shocked by that)

That's very good. The fourth one I wasn't sure about; maybe someone knows. A guy called John Fortune won 2 caps in '64 and (same guy?) won the Hurdles in '78. A bit of a stretch, I suppose, and John Fortune is not an uncommon name.

Would be very surprised if it was the same Fortune. He was before my time but my dad assures me that when he was picked to play against New Zealand for his first cap there was consternation as he was not considered to be all that good. Mind you, he played very well and scored a try in a 6-5 defeat which is still considered by those who were there (it was before TV) to have been the closest we came to beating New Zealand.

Scrum.com gives his date of birth as 1 December 1933 so he would have been just 20 playing NZ and 34 in 1978, assuming the championships were held before December. So it's possible it's the same guy but I would be surprised.

    Thanks for the info.

But don't you mean 30 and 44? 44 is probably too old, so I'd doubt it's the same guy.

Ah yes. You know I earned a maths degree many moons ago, so differential calculus is no problem to me at all.

It's the arithmetic that gets me. :)
