Just wondering did anyone ever take a trip here? Not sure if it's still standing been a while since I've been down home but I always wanted to go look around inside. My nan used to work in it, and even goin in there when it was open and running there was something scary about the place, probably how old it was really...but since then anytime I drove by the derelict building I wanted to go in. My nan was in it once since it closed, as was my mam, and they said that inside it looked like people had just been told to drop everything and get out anyway possible. There's always been something drawing me to it though, even through the creepynes of it!

This is the main entrance on the east block iirc Wexford2.jpg

Was treated as a patient there many times. Its been badly vandalised and is in a shocking state.

I wouldnt recommend sneaking in, its very derelict and dangerous, bits of the roof are coming off. Plus security patrol it quite a bit.

Really spooky place though, especially with its long history, it used to be a workhouse before it was a hospital.

    Become a security guard!

Due to Ireland's lack of institutional care in the early 19th century workhouses became a holding ground for anyone classed as a "lunatic" which included people with slight mental dissablities and they were treated poorly. A good angle if you want to start looking at Paranormal activity.

yeah that's what I was thinking...I knew it had a crazy ward back in the day, there seems to be some I dunno, oddity there though, my nan worked in the old hospital for years, probably most her life and when talking to her about it last week she insisted there was no ward of this kind, until both my grandad and myself insisted there was and showed her...just sorta seems strange to me...meh

have worked in building beside it previously, all that remains of the old hospital is an old ruin, that is most certainly unsafe to enter, the only reason it is still standing is because some iddiot got a preservation order stuck on it!!! :D

I think it's an amazing building and should be preserved...I know a few people around would like to see it turned into an old folks home or summit...

personally id like the see the OPW take it as a late historical monument. people are only beginning to realise the important of contemporary archaeology

Wards were generally unseperated due to the lack of knowledge if mental illness. However I doubt your gran is that old to be alive in the period im talking about. Perhaps your great gran!

The hubby was admitted to a hospital in Leitrim, I won't say where, last year for an ingrown toenail. He reckons the place was haunted, he kept hearing screams and roaring every night. I told him that maybe it was other patients but he still insists the place is "not right".

Aww, I'm dying to know which one, now :) There's a hospital right behind my house, y'see, and I often wonder about it, as the building between us and it was a workhouse, and a large portion of the land surrounding it was a famine graveyard. Add to that the noises I've heard and my son's imaginary mortal enemy and the questions increase :)

getting a bit of history would be the first move to determine if theres ever been any reports of paranormal activity. if it has then you could work out how to get a look at it (approaching the owners/people in charge directly is a good move). If its got no history of paranormal activity then maybe it mightnt be worth the effort.

Kind of defeats the purpose of "investigating" a site that dosnt promise results. You run the risk of becoming a Most Haunted Ghost Buster than a legitimate paranormal investigator.

Id say you wont get access anyway but on an investigation my first point would be to find a trusted and proven person receptive to the paranormal, get your gear and go from there. Look at the history after the investigation or else you could ruin your perception of the site.

    Most Haunted style

very true but it also saves you a lot of time - unless you strike it lucky.

If theres no suggestion at all that somewhere may be haunted then what exactly would there be to investigate? - now thats most daunted style.

A bit of organisation saves effort and puts you on a track to do some actual research. It surely doesnt defeat the purpose of investigating and the only thing that will make anyone "run the risk of becoming a Most Haunted Ghost Buster than a legitimate paranormal investigator" is 'investigating' somewhere on the remote offchance its haunted or because it looks creepy. Thats just a waste of time, resources and is more for scares and giggles than research. Theres no crime in trying to think smart.

Well if i got a call .. "I live in a big old castle, is it haunted"

Id love to be the first one in with EVP, Video, Photography ect to try to find something. After a night of nothingness. Id say "not likely" but here is the history of the area and the structure.

Im a great believer in the historical and archaeological features in or around the area rather then hearsay stories and tourist handouts. The investigation dosnt end when everyone goes home. grimesy here usually hits the libraries to debunk or prove ..... stuff ! :D

i know where youre coming from - all Im saying is that with a bit if research you can find interesting places to check out rather than trust pot luck. in your scenario of a haunted castle, you'd want to talk to the people face to face and try and fathom out if they're taking the piss or not.

Not that many paranormal , probably because most are still running institutions and access and amature paranormal investigators cant get access. Ive also noticed that paranormal stories only surround tourist attractions and cash generating opportunities.
