    You've two choices I think.

    A Nikon D40 or a Pentax K100D.

Both excellent cameras which will knock the socks off a compact or bridge camera.

I got a Canon 400D for €510, however don't think you can get it for that prince in a shop in Ireland so that probably rules it out for Christmas

Dixons/Currys sometimes have offers on Oly DSLRs, the thing to watch out for is the lens included, it used to be a 17.5-45 in place of the normal 14-45 but this may have changed since they replaced this lens with the 14-42. Also the ultra cheap kits used to have an adapter to hold two AAs in place of a LI-ion battery.

Having said all that if you can lay your hands on a E400, E410 or E500 they will easily outperform any bridge model.

Second hand 20D or similar would be the finest.

That is a very good camera for a very good price. You would not go wrong with it.

    D40 + 18-55 Lens.
Agreed, For what your looking for and the price range it is a very good deal, especially for a Bricks'N'Mortar store.
    I would recommend this option!

Bear in mind that is only the start of it. Pretty soon you'll spend all your money on new gear for that shiny new body...

I'd say get one of the bodies recommend above with a cheap lens and save up for a good quality lens.
