I've been enjoying the 'best of' threads on the forum and since there's a few more topics worthy of consideration, and since I'm sure the mods don't want the forum inundated with tons of threads, I figured we could cram the remaining topics into this one.

The best wrestler, match of the year and women of the year have already been discussed so we can leave them out. I nicked the categories below off of other forums. Feel free to mention other categories you think should be listed.

Vince's top three system seems to work well so list three choices if you can.
Each number one choice will get 5 points, number two will get 3 points and number 3 will get 1 point.

    Here are my picks...

    Tag team of the year

    1. Matt Hardy & MVP
    2. Cade & Murdoch
    3. Motor City Machine Guns

Not the best year for tag team wrestling!. I love the chemistry of MCMG but feel they have been made to look bad in TNA. Cade & Murdoch improved greatly on Raw but were handled badly by WWE themselves, particularly around Wrestlemania time. Hardy and MVP were the most only entertaining thing in tag team wrestling for me and were handled very nicely.

    Most improved wrestler of 2007

    1. John Cena
    2. MVP
    3. Candice Michelle

Cena went from "you can't wrestle" chants at One Night Stand in 2006 to tearing down the house on numerous PPV events in 2007 so he gets my vote. MVP was hugely impressive throughout 2007 and deserves much praise. Candice's in-ring improvement was remarkable too I feel.

    PPV of the year

    1. Royal Rumble
    2. Backlash
    3. Wrestlemania 23

Best Rumble in years I think. Backlash was more satisfying than WM I feel.

    Crap match of the year

    1. "Rosie" vs "Donald"
    2. Storm vs Harris (blindfold match)
    3. Kane vs Khali

The Rosie/Donald thing was a disaster. Storm/Harris was embarrassingly bad and Kane vs Khali was just craptacular.

Showman Of The Year (Can get the crowd pumped)

    1. John Cena
    2. Shawn Michaels
    3. Jeff Hardy

The crowds for Cena matches were really hot. Michaels got the crowd pumped too and Jeff really stepped up and got some big pops.

Veteran Of The Year (40 and older)

    1. Shawn Michaels
    2. Finlay
    3. Ric Flair

HBK was on fire. Finlay was terrific again and Flair's great promos merit him a place I feel.

    Speaker of the year
    1. Ric Flair
    2. Santino Marella
    3. John Cena

Flair had a few great promos. The one ripping on Carlito is my favourite of 2007. He gave another great one last Monday. In my opinion Naitch was the king in 2007. Santino was hilarious on the mic in 2007 and is my choice for runner-up. I'll go with Cena in number three as I felt he toned down the Rock-style promos and showed good intensity.

    Funniest of 2007

    1. Santino
    2. Ron Simmons
    3. Jillian Hall

I think Santino's the funniest character they've had in years and he made me laugh loads of times. Ron Simmons was involved in a lot of entertaining skits during the year. As for Jillian, probbaly not a choice many would go with but she makes me laugh when she tries to belt out a tune. :)

    Feud of the year

    1. MVP vs Matt Hardy
    2. Shawn Michaels vs John Cena
    3. Batista vs Undertaker

The Hardy/MVP stuff was creative and worked well. Michaels and Cena had a good run before injuries got in the way and Taker/Batista carried their feud throughout the entire year.

    Commentator of the year

    1. JBL
    2. J.R.
    3. Tazz

I'd give the nod to JBL due to his considerable improvement and also for doing a good job at No Way Out when Michael Cole lost his voice and he had to call the main event on his own. J.R. was his usual solid self and I found Tazz's stuff to be funny.

    Spot of the Year

    1. Lashley breaking the cage on ECW
    2. Kennedy's Green Bay Plunge on Hornswoggle at WM23
    3. Michaels finally hits Cena with Sweet Chin Music on Raw before Mania

    Segment of the year

    1. Flair ripping on Carlito at Raw
    2. Santino singing "They tried to make me watch The Condemned"
    3. Santino gets a stunner and gets soaked in beer

Maybe Debut of the Year, Gimmick of the year and most dissapointing could be added?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,045 ✭✭✭Vince135792003

I think a good idea would be to when this is done to include all the winners in a sticky or something and then make it a yearly thing that people can look back on.

Also I think we have enough best of's at this stage! By the way if someone wants to PM me, we can share the load of adding all of these lists up.

    Here are my picks anyway...

    Tag team of the year

    1. Cade and Murdoch
    2. London and Kendrick
    3. LAX

I really don't have alot to say on this one. If I had watched more of TNA I'm sure the Motor City machines guns would have been up there but I have pretty much avoided TNA so I'm not gonna put teams in that I haven't seen enough of.

    Most improved wrestler of 2007

    1. MVP
    2. Randy Orton (he's always been good but he's really been consistently this year)
    3. Batista (Working with 'Taker has obviously helped him but generally he was much better in the ring this year than when he just came back from his injury last year.)

    PPV of the year

    1. Backlash
    2. Royal Rumble
    3. Wrestlemania 23

If this included MMA ppv's I'm not sure a wrestling one would make my top 5.

    Crap match of the year

    1. Storm vs Harris (blindfold match)
    2. Rose versus Donald
    3. Electrified cage match

Showman Of The Year (Can get the crowd pumped)

    1. John Cena
    2. Shawn Michaels
    3. Jeff Hardy

Veteran Of The Year (40 and older)

    1. Shawn Michaels
    2. Undertaker
    3. Finlay

    Speaker of the year
    1. Vince McMahon
    2. Santino Marella
    3. John Cena

    Funniest of 2007

    1. Santino
    2. Vince McMahon
    3. Jillian Hall

    Feud of the year

    1. Shawn Michaels v John Cena
    2. Jeff Hardy versus Umaga (loved their little programme together)
    3. Trump versus McMahon (I enjoyed and it made lots of money)

    Commentator of the year

    1. Jim Ross
    2. JBL
    3. Tazz

    Spot of the Year

    1. Shawn Michaels super kicking John Cena before Wrestlemania

    Segment of the year

    1. Jim Ross announced as being inducted into the Hall of Fame and the standing ovation that followed. Very few things emotionally move me in wrestling, especially after this year but this did: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnyHwx5wwW8

    2. Steve Austin announced as the special ref for McMahon/Trump. I wish I could find this on youtube. It could not have been done any better.

    3. Santino being stunnered..

    Tag team of the year

    1. Kevin Steen and El Generico
    2. The Briscoes
    3. Motor City Machine Guns

A terrible year for the tag division in "the big 2". The tag division was great in TNA last year but they blew it and WWE hasn't had a healthy division in years. Steenerico have come out of nowhere and really impressed me this year. I love their chemistry with Steen as the bully and Generico who is just happy to be there. They edge out the Briscoes who imo aren't impressing me as much as this time last year.

BTW the tag match of the year top three are all matches between Steenerico and the Briscoes, at Death Before Dishonor, Man Up and FYF Philly in that order.

    Most improved wrestler of 2007

    1. Batista
    2. MVP
    3. John Cena

Batista and Cena have proved us all wrong this year and have won over a lot of new fans in the process. The Batista Taker feud was way better than anyone could have hoped for, and Cena vs Michaels, while it was always gonna be good, really exceded expectations. MVP has had a great year too, probably the MVP of Smackdown this year (see what I did there?)

    PPV of the year

    1. Driven
    2. Royal Rumble
    3. Respect is Earned

Driven by a country mile. The Rumble just edges out Backlash as WWE's best effort and TNA had **** all to get excited about so RiE gets the nod for third.

    Crap match of the year

    1. Storm vs Harris (blindfold match)
    2. Storm vs Harris (blindfold match)
    3. Storm vs Harris (blindfold match)

Everything that is wrong with TNA can be seen in this match. I can think of plenty of bad matches but none come near to this one so it gets all my votes.

Showman Of The Year (Can get the crowd pumped)

    1. Shawn Michaels
    2. Bryan Danielson
    3. John Cena

When Danielson is on form, the vast majority of the time, the crowd will be hanging on hiss every move. This being said, he's no Shawn Michaels. Yet.

Veteran Of The Year (40 and older)

    1. Shawn Michaels
    2. Finlay
    3. Ric Flair

    Cant argue with that.

    Speaker of the year

    1. Larry Sweeney
    2. Jimmy Jacobs
    3. MVP

Larry Sweeney is just great as a manager, definitely the best talker in ROH. Jacobs cut some great promos during his feud with Whitmer, the Age of the Fall stuff has disappointed though. MVP is very entertaining and his Hardy feud is proof of that.

    Funniest of 2007

    1. Santino Marella
    2. Larry Sweeney
    3. MVP

Santino has been gold for the second part of the year after his heel turn and has been hilarious with his Austin bashing. He just edges out Sweeney.

    Feud of the year

    1. Briscoes vs Steenerico
    2. Batista vs Undertaker
    3. MVP vs Matt Hardy

Briscoes vs Steeneerico was great from start to finish and was booked to perfection. Batista and Taker wsa way better than it should have been and MVP and Hardy established MVP as a top player in WWE.

    Commentator of the year

    1. JBL
    2. Dave Prazak
    3. J.R.

JBL is a wrestling god. Prazak is the man and JR is still the best ever.

    Spot of the Year

    1. Package Piledriver on a ladder from Man Up
    2. J Driller on a ladder from Man Up
    3. Michaels finally hits Cena with Sweet Chin Music on Raw before Mania

    Segment of the year

    1. Sweet and Sours cookie monster skit at Driven
    2. Santino singing "They tried to make me watch The Condemned"
    3. Flair cutting Carlito a new one.

    Tag team of the year
    1. Kevin Steen & El Generico
    2. Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin
    3. Cade & Murdoch

Slow year for tag team wrestling in the main two promotions, I'm actually basing the Murder City Machine Guns on their work in Japan and ROH, which was excellent. Steen and Generico have been hugely impressive, one solitary tryout match leading to ROH's biggest feud of the year. Cade and Murdoch were great at the start of the year, I put them slightly ahead of the Briscoes, who had some excellent matches but also had a few that I didn't enjoy completely

    Most improved wrestler of 2007
    1. John Cena
    2. Hiroshi Tanahashi
    3. MVP

I hated Cena last year, I've often liked him this year, he's just much more entertaining in the ring. Tanahashi wasn't liked by a lot of New Japan fans last year, but he's put on some great main event matches this year, pretty much the same as Cena really. I haven't watched much SD this year but MVP has clearly improved

    PPV of the year
    1. ROH Driven
    2. WWE Backlash
    3. ROH Man Up

I really enjoyed Driven, it had the match of the year! Solid elsewhere on the card. Backlash was solid all the way with some great matches, and the matches that weren't as great still did their job very well. Man Up was a more balanced card than Driven and incredibly solid in-ring stuff. If it had been three hours long and just as good then I might have put it ahead of Backlash

    Crap match of the year
    1. Harris vs Storm, blindfold match
    2. Some Batista vs Kane match on SD, I can't pick out the date

Showman Of The Year (Can get the crowd pumped)
    1. John Cena
    2. Bryan Danielson
    3. Shawn Michaels

Veteran Of The Year (40 and older)
    1. Shawn Michaels
    2. Finlay
    3. Undertaker

    Speaker of the year
    1. Larry Sweeney
    2. Santino
    3. Jimmy Jacobs

Larry Sweeney has been entertaining every time I've seen him, and he's obviously a natural on the mic. Santino's been great once he turned heel. Jimmy has done some really awesome promos, although some kinda bad ones too. But the really great ones that reminded me of Cactus Jack are enough to make him number 3 for me

    Funniest of 2007
    1. Santino
    2. Larry Sweeney

Same as before, but Santino's funny every time he talks, whereas Sweeney is often serious, so not as much funniness from him. I can't really think of anyone else who made me laugh often

    Feud of the year
    1. Briscoes vs Steen & Generico
    2. John Cena vs Shawn Michaels
    3. MVP vs Matt Hardy

The Briscoes vs Steen and Generico was a really well booked feud. Logical and emotional. Cena and Michaels I found very interesting and MVP vs Matt Hardy has been nice to see because of the length of it, without it getting repetitive

    Commentator of the year
    1. JBL
    2. Dave Prazak
    3. JR

I was critical of JBL at first but he improved quick enough and he's done great since. Prazak is much better these days, able to get the moves, the wrestlers and the stories over. JR is the best of the rest, even if he's getting more frequent with his miscalls

    Spot of the Year
    1. Steen's package piledriver on the ladder at Man Up
    2. Jay Briscoe's jay-driller on the ladder at Man Up
    3. Michael's superkick to Cena before WM

    Segment of the year
    1. WWE's Dating Game
    2. Santino gets stunnered
    3. WWE's song contest

    Good ol Santino

I can only speak for myself, and I never said that. That would be the Midnight Express!

Just wondering: Are those of you who put Mike Tenay as your best commentator taking the piss? Himself and Don West ruined a ridiculous amount of segments with their un-neccesary amount of talking!

It was the same in WCW i have dvds with some WCW matches from the late 90's and Tenay and Dusty Rhodes were ***** commentating. They would totally go off subject of the match. Best announcer would have to be JBL. Even though he isnt commentating anymore. He was the best improved anyway.:D

Half of what Mike Tenay says is completely unnecessary. He'll either be telling you exactly what you're seeing or repeating someone's promo. Could you imagine him on commentary during Raw last week, with Flair's speech and JBL and Jericho interacting?! He would have ruined those promos! It's a pity because he wasn't that bad back in the day, he really knew his stuff

He was great as part of a 3 man commentating booth in WCW.

Tenay and Dusty tried to call the matches but Schiavone and Heenan were shown up by the knowledge of Tenay. Tenay and Styles were the first commentators to actually call the moves happening in the match, not JR or Michael Cole.

What did the commentators before the 90's do?

What about Gordon Solie? And I'm pretty sure he even wasn't the first.

Many fans seem to think that calling moves is the only important aspect of commentary. It's not. What Vince McMahon wants from his announcers -story-telling - is an integral part of it. It's the same with football. If the commentary simply reflected calling the action - "pass to Ronaldo, back to Giggs" etc then it would be dull as dishwater. There's more to it than that however.

You see the difference is Tenay would be calling a match between Guerrero and Mysterio and he'd call the match along with story such as the importance of the mask in Mexico or the great legacy of the Guerrero family but in WWE (true story) theres a 4 or 5 person cruiserweight match and JBL and Cole spent what was a good match talking about Vince McMahon and only called the finish(there was a moonsault from Jimmy Wang Yang to the floor in that match and they ignored it).

The WWE commentary is better but what Machismo says really pisses me off aswell. They'll spend the whole of the first two matches talking about Vince or HHH or Cena and then at the very end they'll say "what a move by Yang, he really is going to be a superstar" or something along those lines. It's very hypocritical when instead of calling the match they have a discussion and then at the end talk about the competitors as if they're the best thing since sliced bread despite the fact they ignored everything in their match bar the spots

Tis true about the ignorance in WWE commentating

I think his commentary style would be poor in this day and age but for its time I don't think Vince's commentary was really all that bad.
