new rig (again)

building new rig for evryday computing, high end gaming, cad, etc.

have 3 things i need opinions on, 2 mainboards (want to keep prices down if i can, but want passive and very good oc'ing potential.)

    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=329099 @ €187
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=340951 @ €204

is it worth going for the x38 chipset over the 680i? i have a 680i at the moment, n it really couldnt be better in my opinion!... will i regret not goin for the x38??

    n then 3 cpus,

    e6750 @ 2.67ghz € 172.50
    e6850 @ 3.00ghz € 249.01
    Q6600 @ 2.4ghz € 249.01

i have an e6600 overclockable to 3.6 for games, which is lightning fast, so i think ill be very happy with the e6750, (i put the e6850 there cause i likes the look of it...worth it?....) i dunno if the quad is worth the bother, very liitle multi threaded programs, its an fsb @1066 and the dual cores have considerably higher clock speeds.

im stumped at the graphics cards...
    http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=341856 € 249.01 ?????? opinions???

really? the quad?....dammit, more expensive n less clock speed.

good that that mobo is fine

8800gt > 8800gts (512) whem it comes to bang for buck?

any point goin for the higher clocked evga one?...or jus oc myself?

and another question, wat speed ram can i get with that mobo? pc6400 is fine, pc8000????

Yeah get the quad it ll be better in the long run and if you have any cooling fans bar your stock ones you can OC to at least 3 ghz.

With the Asus mobo you can go as far as 800MHz

And a heads the Asus one has a very long line complaints of the onboard sound people say its tin's and crackles

Benchmarks so far are showing the GTS 512 are performing i think in around 10% better then the GT. That said its not a huge FPS increase and if it comes down to price id go for the GT.

i knew ever1 was gonna say go for the quad, ill have to have a good think about it...

which mobo has the complints about sound? theyre both asus.

    8800gt it is then

i may change the processor to a quad if i can persuade myself.... averythin else okay?

have 32 bit xp n 32bit vista, dunno whicj ill be usin...(depends on their respective service packs in january) i know only 3.25 gb will register, but im okay with that

might change the blue orb aswell, dunno if itl be upta the job of overclockin, dunno wat would be best tho

for a cooler go for the thermright 120 ultra and chang the psu to a seasonic or crosair(seasonic).why go for the fugly case and esp when its 150e ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 999 ✭✭✭cregser

Whats up with all the +12v rails? Is it not better to get one +12v rail with a sh*t load of amps?

case is 108e, and i happen to think its a very pretty case! + it looks like itl have fair good airflow with them 2 big ass fans (+ those fans r quite)

the big ass tuniq tower it is so, (ye said they have a very poor base finish, and that lapping is pretty much a must...im too lazy for that, that matter?)

although, i will mention that that case would be blowing cool air straight onto the orb, whereas it wont do any good really with tuniq in the way.n take into consideration that teh orb looks cool, and is cheaper...still a no???

    this psu then? http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=339898

This CPU cooler is awesome, I have it sitting on my q6600 clocked at 3.2 and I have average temps of 45 on load.. Then again, I don't really run lots of things at once.

hmmm, looks pretty snazzy. im always a bit aprehensive when lookin at those real fancy lookin ones, but if ur temps r right, looks pretty good. this is top of the list unless sumone can knock it off.

and @ awhir, okay okay, so im startin to notice the jet engine slammed in the face of that case.... how bout the antec nine hundred? i jus want a really quite case with very good airflow, black, and a side window.

so here we are, (got rid of half the ram, taut it my be overkill, + keep sum savings)

IIRC while the Nine Hundred case is really good... it ain't quiet.

The Cooler Master Dominator (CM 690) is supposed to be pretty good and pretty quiet. Best price: [Link]

sebastian, was gonna add in that that motherboard and the 680i wouldnt be the best combination.

ive got it at home, and since i removed the northbridge heatsink and put on an aftermarket one, there's absoloutly no room left!

    the blue orb is huge.
not the best thing to go for would be a higher one but not so fat.

Just to let you know ive the same mobo and ram and mines acting up now the last couple of days sometimes it will take the ram other times it wont..

Other than that its fine just lately its acted up!

could the problem be that youre ram is 1066mhz?, the ram im goin for is 800mhz pc6400...

the hunt is on now for a nice case (black, quite, airflow, sidewindow, goodlooking)

wanna buy everythin from komplett. (jus easier)

I have that case dude... It's super! Great air flow in it! As you can see from my temps!

Also the Antec is great, I know 2 people with them and they have nothing bad to say about them.

get rid of that asus cooler and get this : http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-039-TR

best air cooler you can get.

if i were you i would go for that Coolmaster case its ment to be the bomb for the price.

also i would go for a x38board and get 2 of these http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-083-PC&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=416

they kick the ass of the gt for 30e extra.

Yea that case is good but for some reason the fan grill things on the front that clip into the case are broken so theres like two harddrive cages and the metal at the front is popping out a bit.. You cant notice unless you go to move the pc.. Its loud but im use to it so I can sleep easily with the pc on in my room.. Its a great case otherwise..

Heres a little video I made awhile ago for someone who said the case was terrible and its was too small!

wow, that case does look good, but it hasnt got any front air intakes, airflow?...

and @ dazftw, YOU SOUND SO FREEKIN IRISH (sorry im quite drunk) lol, im alright with that case aslong as its quite?... (want a quite pc)

@ awhir...thanks fr input, but dnt like the look of those graphics cards for sum reason...i want the option to upgrade from an 8800gt, (ie buy a second one) i dnt have the op-tion with those grafx cards.
that cooler better than the asus???!?!?! does it come with a fan? (i almost fell of me chair at the bar, so im soooo NOT gonna google it n see if it comes with a quite fan..:D:D:D:D)
    which coolermaster case u mean????

would anyone change the ram to summit else by the way?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,824 ✭✭✭RoyalMarine

actually the airflow in the case is amazing. i was shocked at how cold it was.
when i had the side panel off, my feet were cold when the case was under the desk.
there is 2 fans at the front for the harddrives.

average temps inside the case were 16oC

Dave Eyesclosed, add 15'c to your speedfan temps, use coretemp to measure from the chip, not from a sensor on the mobo. Post a pic of coretemp with 4 cores maxed.

Just tried to install that bro.. No go, I got a billion driver not loaded messages..

I'll be happy to post it's result!

Got my CPU up to 3.4 last night, but after an hour of Crysis it crashed out..

Sorry to stray of the thread..

    Found a Vista version.

wat we think of them??...4 gb ram in 2 sticks, ocz, heatpipes, 4-4-4-15 timings, pc6400,.....all at such a good price....wats the catch?

am i right in saying, that with a 512mb video card, and 4gb ram, 3.5 gb of ram will show?

    ^ That's my understanding anyway.

I've been looking at coolers from the replies and this thread and I'm worried about the weight of them. Intel specifies a max weight for socket 775 coolers (top of my head:400g) and many of these mad yokes go well over that limit to in order to support as many CPUs as possible. Surely the weight limitation is there for a reason? Maybe a heavy cooler in a tower PC would pull on the thermal paste, warp the motherboard, shorten it's lifespan?

    edit - http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/memory/display/ocz-reaper_5.html#sect0
That's a review of a similar stick with the same heat pipe. They seem to think it's inefficient.

    http://www.pro-clockers.com/review.php?id=281&page=3
This a more positive review of a redesigned heat spreader. Probably more expensive...

edit edit -- reading the second review it seems low memory timings are overated compared to a fast FSB.

I have that cooler. It is a very good cooler.

It comes with a backing plate so the motherboard can take the extra weight, and some very long spring mounted pins, makes great solid contact.

I would not be worried about the weight of the cooler.

@ cregster, ya had to go bringin up another problem point huh!?!?!:D i dnt really think the whole weight thing would matter too much, i mean the manufacturers have to test the coolers first. most of the downward force is held by the retention clips anyway, only the force of the retention clips is put on the chip. (my point of view on it anyway)

im jus after seein 8800gt cards on komplett (not in stock at the moment) with 1gb of vram!, i didnt even realise they existed yet! worth a poke around? (im on dial-up here, cant go investigate)
