How does one isolate vocals from a track?

I am pretty sure this topic crosses a couple of forums. Still, a Search yielded not many results.

OK, so I want to try making up a track that uses Artist A's lyrics over the bed of Artist B's track. Can I isolate Artist A's vocals from their track favourably at all?

I have Wavelab and Cool Edit Pro to help me out. The problem is the crossing of some instrumental sounds with the vocal, and web search for the wanted vocals on ther own so far has yielded no results.

If it is not something that can be done 'on the fly', what other methods have you tried if you were (more or less) successful at trying this?

I think the methods normally used involve stripping what's not common between the two stereo tracks. This generally leaves the vocals, but as you said, some intstrumental sounds are left in.

There isn't really any other way to do it on the fly as far as I know.

Its pretty much impossible atm, (well it can be done but it would sound awful, background noise would wreck it) think about it, the music and the vocals are the source, theres no way to strip out the vocal unless you had all the files from the original recording, which I doubt you do? (could be wrong)

Try lookin for the accapella (vocal) online?

No, unfortunately, I don't have the source tracks of the song in question! That word 'acapella' escaped my brain when searching on the usual suspects (Limewire et all). Trying that now.
