I have a ZoomHD16CD...I cant tell you whats best out of all, but this thing has an incredible amount of features packed into it, and you definitely get more bang for your buck cause it cost me 700 and it came with a bunch of editable distortion effects, Phantom Power and Hi-Z if you have an unbalanced connection, a drum machine, and a built in CD burner. The problem is there are so many features on here I'm still trying to figure out how to use it to my advantage.

    A PC?!

I don't have much expereince with stand alone units like these but I'm pretty impressed with what I've heard coming the Roland VS series. I can't remember where I've read it but I think a surprising amount of records have been made on them as well.

The 8 track simultanious recording on the Zoom HD16 sets it apart from the Boss BR1600 which only has two. If you plan on recording drums its very cost effective.

Addison, where did you buy your zoom. Thinking of getting one myself.
    Cheers.

a pc! I deliberately avoid them... i can barely manage photo shop.
I think alot of the standalone recorders have a technophobic meathead target audience, at least that's where I'd put myself...

    I think it's great in conjunction with a P.C.

It's piss easy to use. So no reason to waste those moments where you;re feeling musically creative. You can get down to recording in seconds, just like in the old days with a 4-track, stick it in your backpack and take it to your drummer's house, or whatever.

Then you simply stick it in your PCs USB slot, and drag and drop the WAVs over to Cubase for more in-depth production/editiing/mixing.

Thats the genius of it: Seperating out the right brain stuff: Music. From the left-brain stuff: Engineering. So you're not trying to do both at once.
