Inspiron 6000 problem

I'm having a really weird problem with my laptop, it only started recently, 2 weeks maybe? I'll explain it below:

When I start it from cold, the BIOS logo appears in a different aspect ratio to what it would normally appear in; that's a sure sign that it's going to happen. What happens is, the XP logo appears as normal but then at the point where the GUI would normally start, the screen shuts off and Windows boots up blind with nothing on the screen (I know it's booting because I can hear it). The screen is actually off, not just black. The Enable VGA mode option does nothing to help it either, still boots up black. But after a few attempts to boot it up it eventually snaps out of it and it works fine, until it's left switched off for a few hours.

I've attached two photos of the BIOS logo for reference. The first image is how it normally appears, it's crushed so as to allow the logo to appear correctly with panel stretching enabled. In the second situation (where it'll boot up with no screen), the logo appears "correct" with no modification - this usually only happens when an external monitor is plugged in.

Any ideas? If it weren't for the BIOS logo I'd assume an OS issue.
