IBM Thinkpad - onscreen display??

Recently did an upgrade from win 98se to win xp on my ibm thinkpad, everything went fine but the onscreen display/indicators for volume and brightness do not appear anymore?? Does anyone know how to fix this?? Also the dvd player is stuck in region 1:(

Youll need drivers for it m8, check ibms site for those, if theres no xp ones out (quite likely) your possibly going to be stuck, It can be called many things but usually something like "Hotkey Application"
