This was added in the new firmware update for PS3, but I think it deserves its own thread!

One of the stealth features added is the ability to play all PSone games on your PSP via remote play on the PS3!

Don't know why this wasn't mentioned in the upgrade notes, but it works.

You can now play any PSone games you have on your PS3 HDD, or a PSone game in the disc drive, on your PSP, anywhere in the world.

You have to have your PS3 on with a PS1 disk inside. Also you have to have your PSP in range of a wireless network to play a PS1 game. Anybody else think that this is dumb?

Why couldn't they allow interested users in playing their PS1 games officially off the memory card on the PSP? I know that this is possible by using custom firmware but it isn't straightforward.

I don't own a PSP yet or a PS3. I'm thinking of getting the PSP slim now and a big plus would be being able to play my old games on it.

All of the PSN PS1 titles are already playable on the ps3 and the psp directly - you don't need to use remote play to play them. This feature is only really useful if you want to play a PS1 game from a disc in your PS3 remotely.

Do you mean PS1 games downloaded from the PSN store? Thats great, don't get me wrong, but what about PS1 games you already own?

I'm just annoyed at the fact that you either have to go mess around with the firmware to do something that could so easily be provided officially. That or else wait for the game you want to play to appear and buy it again.

So, you want Sony to provide a tool for ripping games from their disks, which you can then play off a memory stick? As in providing an easily pirateable version of ps1 games?

Surely you see why Sony are not interested in this approach?

Or have more games on your PSone games on your PS3 than your PSP memstick can hold.

It would be truly great if you could rip your PSone games to the PS3 HDD to have access to your whole library via remote play..I don't know if each PSone disc has a unique identifier that could be used to authorise ripping for that game on a single machine?

There no reason not to, no one makes the games anymore, copyright owners don't make money only way to get them is secondhand and developers don't get any money for that.
just to point out a new game in a shop only a small amount goes to the shop
    new game they make €5
those second hand games all that goes to the shop
    secondhand they make €50

if the ps3 only ripped certain games that developers allowed so if there making a psp game of the first metal gear you can't rip the old game

may get final fantast 7 that way

Yeah, but Sony, being a business, whose job it is to make money from every angle possible, make cash by ripping the games themselves, and then selling them to PS1 fanatics via the Playstation store.

Sony don't care that you already have a copy of the game - why sell a guy one copy, when you can sell him two? Anyway, they get two revenue streams - people who loved the originals and want to play them again, and people who never had a PS1 and want to play the games they never got to play... They can also reuse the same infrastructure to distribute original IP (such as Super Rub a Dub, which my wife enjoys immensely...)

Don't get me wrong, I don't like it any more than the next guy, but I'm a realist - as long as Sony can still make money from these games, they will want to encourage sales - and releasing a disc ripping app would totally go against this.

This feature is ****ing excellent! I have a bunch of ps1 games still kicking around my house, i set this up last night, and was palying FFVII and resident evil 2 after a half hour setting up the remote play. I know some cynics will say 'yeah but you could just get a hacked psp and download the games as roms' etc, but for people like me who cant be bothered chipping psp's or whatever, this is a godsend. I actually just bought a psp cause of this feature. Its brilliant. Now ive got vagrant story, ffvii, MGS, resi series etc all ready to go.
Its the msot use my ps3 has had since i got it
