This might be the wrong place to post this, but does anyone know when that giant sports crossword for Christmas in the Indo is out, or have I missed it?

Is it not the Times that does it? I'm probably wrong though!

Times does one. So does the Tribune. I think. My bet is it will come out tomorrow (Friday) The Times one, that is.

I'm pretty chuffed with myself - nearly got it finished. Well, a relative got a few.

Just curious has anyone got the combination 44 down and 49 across to work?

I have one for 44 down ("Doctor in 1948 Five nations (4)") which I'm 99.9% sure is correct.

Then before looking thought I had the one for 49 across ("Drugged winner in 2006 (6)"), but the first letter doesn't fit (it's the third letter of 44 down) (the third and fifth letters I had in mind would fit).

    Very frustrating.
I'm willing to "trade" by private messaging for a few correct answers (just like one might down at the pub) if anyone has these two combinations to work.

Is there a track record of errors? I never did this one before.

Ok. Not getting any replies so here's more info.
I think 44 down is Karl.
    It starts with K.
    It has 4 letters.

Karl is for Dr. Karl Mullen.
He was captain of the Irish Rugby team in 1948 who won the grand slam that year.
He was involved in rugby for decades after this.

Third letter of his name is R so that gives R-N-I- for "drugged winner in 2006".
I thought it would be L-N-I-.

However if somebody can give me a plausible R-N-I- (with reasoning), I'm willing to give a few of the other ones they might need.

44 dn is not Karl. Only 5 left to get myself. PM me if you want to do a sneaky bit of swapping.

    44 down is kyle
    49 accross is landis

    Thanks :)

Looking at it now, I shouldn't have got so stuck on Karl as the answer as that's a first name.
I did think it was Landis.

If you are doing it and want some of the other answers, pm me.

There's two possible answers to five across "Golden Swimmer in Athens"

    _ H _ _ _ S

It could be Phelps (5 Gold medals) or Thomas (only 3)

    Sneaky.

    Phelps fits.
