Two trains cancelled in driver dispute
    Sunday, 16 December 2007 22:16

Two trains on the Cork to Dublin route were cancelled today as a result of a dispute between the management and drivers.

The row is over the operation of the Sunday schedule.

As a result of the dispute the 11am and 2pm services from Dublin to Cork were cancelled.

Travellers on the Tralee to Mallow service were also affected and had to be bussed between stations.

Talks are due to take place tomorrow to try and resolve the dispute.

The 1330 Westport to Dublin was delayed until 1425 both this Sunday and last Sunday.

It's a disgrace really, if you get a job in a travel industry you just have to accept timetable and rostering changes, end of! At least the drivers in Harristown had good reason to distrupt the travelling public. The Iarnród Éireann drivers involved in this nonsense are a bunch of spoilt brats, they have to go to work an hour earlier, awh God help them!

    In fairness to all :

the harristown dispute had been to the labour court and the whole nine yards.

This dispute you are on about is IE imposing a roster change with almost no notice [ I may be wrong since I don't work for CIE ]

There were no drivers for a couple of Cobh/Cork trains this morning. I wonder if it was related. (it also turns out that 2 coaches can't carry the load of 6 railcars, who knew)

No notice? The timetables were on the IE website about 3-4 weeks in advance. Anyway, it's public transport - if the times are designed to help the public, the staff should operate them.

The dispute in Cork has been on the cards since the Summer of 2006. Back then, Phil Flynn arranged for IE management to have the agreement on a "new working week" for drivers nationwide, settled within 6 weeks. It was put in writing. Ive seen the letter. However IE management have failed to do this after much spoofing, dithering and downright arrogance.

Cork appeared to be unhappiest with the lack of progress and signalled (bad pun-sorry) their intention not to cooperate with the new timetable. Disruption only surrounds new timetabled trains. Cork drivers are operating the old timetable as a form of protest. That decision was taken instead of a strike.

Cancellations on the Cobh line and subsequent replacement by buses is a direct result of this dispute. Drivers are not operating newly timetabled trains. IE management are trying to keep it quiet by referring to trains as cancelled and substituted by Bus. If you're clever and have last years timetable, then you will see that only the newly introduced services are replaced by a bus.

IE management really only have themselves to blame for this. Just like 2006, they insist on "pushing" a section of workers, inconvenience loyal customers and then blame the workers. Its not really a great way to run a business, but there you go.

nope. the regular running-for-the-last-number-of-years services didn't run.

as above, the standard ones didn't run.

    once more for luck.

aanyway, all these subtle distinctions are totally lost on the commuter left behind in outlying stations with no information.

I'd like to know what the story is with a place like Charleville. If an Up train scheduled to stop at Charleville is canx, does the next train stop at the stop or do passengers have to be transfered to Limerick Jct. or Thurles by taxi/bus.

Ah that would be caused by Drivers refusing to work their rest days and no cover available. It is indeed a related matter. However the most obvious disruption is to newly timetabled trains.

Subtle distinctions may be lost on the customer, but they have the right to know that IE management are very poor at managing their staff and that it isn't always the staff that are to blame. Im sure that many here who work in a private non-unionised sector could list examples of poor staff management. It does happen and its rampant in IE.

For the record, Im not a train driver, union member or CIE employee.
