    I am currently in 1st year in college and I was just wondering what are the keys things to have on your CV? I read bits and pieces on the web about things like team sports etc...Are these important?

    Well I have 4 categories on my CV. More than half of it is about education qualifications and work experience and then a few bullet points about skills profile and interests and activites. Seems to get me interviews anyway

    • Skip flowery phrases
    • show specifics;
    • arrange them in bullets;
    • and quantify achievements whenever possible (numbers, %, etc.).

    I don't include hobbies in mine at all....

    Name on top with address and contact details
    Education (most recent down to Leaving Cert listing just points achieved and results available on request).
    Key Skills (includes typing speed, computer applications I'm proficient in and stuff like organised etc)
    Work Experience (most recent first)
    Additional Qualifications and Achievements (drama exams, driving licence).
    What I can do for your company (paragraph on why they should pick me)
    References (available on request)

    Include interests by all means if they are genuine and you feel they say something positive about you. It's no harm and may serve as an icebreaker or might help an interviewer to target some questions if you're a little light on work exp.

    Number one thing not to do is put down bland filler interests. Shocking how many CVs I've seen that state variations on - 'enjoy swimming, reading, going to the cinema'. Valid and genuine that they may be all something like that says to me is (a) this person has no imagination or (b) this person could be a serial killer.

    In addition to what the other posters mention, you might wish to create a tailored CV for each job application: i.e. if a applying to a sports company emphasise team based activities on the CV, etc.
